Chapter 4 - A Daughter's TrustBy dawn, the estate was locked down like a fortress. Armed guards patrolled the perimeter, and high-tech security grids hummed around the property.

I stood in the library, staring out at the mist-covered lake, when soft footsteps sounded behind me.
I turned to see Lila standing in the doorway, wearing an oversized white shirt and holding her pink backpack. She looked small in the massive room, but her gaze was steady.
"Where is Mommy?" she asked softly.
"She’s resting upstairs," I said, dropping down on one knee so I was at eye level with her. For a man who controlled billions and commanded fear across an entire city, kneeling before this six-year-old felt like the most important act of my life.
"Are you the bad guy my mom was running from?" Lila asked innocently, tilting her head.
The question hit me like a bullet to the chest.
"No, Lila," I said, my voice thick with emotion. "I swear to you on my life... I am the man who is going to make sure no one ever makes your mom run again."
She walked over slowly, reached into her backpack, and pulled out the small notebook with the faded star stickers. She opened it to the crayon drawing of the dark-haired woman, the little girl, and the tall man in the black suit.
She pulled a black crayon from her pocket and carefully drew a small heart between the man and the girl.
"Mommy told me my dad was a hero who had to stay away to keep us safe," Lila whispered, looking up into my eyes. "Are you him? Are you my dad?"
Tears burned the backs of my eyes—a feeling I hadn't experienced since I was a boy.
"Yes, Lila," I said, reaching out with trembling fingers to gently touch her soft cheek. "I’m your dad. And I am never, ever letting you go again."
She threw her tiny arms around my neck and hugged me tightly. As I wrapped my arms around my daughter for the first time in my life, a silent vow took root deep within my soul.
