Chapter 9 - THE INHERITANCE THAT MADE RICHARD BEGThe next morning, the truth exploded across the media.

Richard Whitmore's arrest became national news.
The Whitmore real estate empire began collapsing within hours.
But Sarah didn't care.
She sat beside Catherine and Margaret in a quiet room at the church.
The document lay on the table.
Howard explained everything.
“Thomas Monroe owned controlling shares in several companies before his death.”
Sarah looked stunned.
“How much?”
Howard answered carefully.
“Enough to make you one of the wealthiest women in the country.”
Sarah laughed bitterly.
“All these years I thought I was poor.”
Margaret smiled.
“You were never poor.”
Sarah looked at her.
“We were.”
“No.”
Margaret shook her head.
“We didn't have money.”
She touched Sarah's hand.
“But we had each other.”
That sentence stayed with Sarah.
The inheritance could buy everything she had once dreamed about.
Except time.
She couldn't buy back the years she had spent being ashamed.
She couldn't erase the lies.
She couldn't undo the day she had told Margaret to stay away from the cameras.
So she did something unexpected.
She refused most of the inheritance for herself.
Instead, she created a foundation.
The Margaret Ellis Foundation.
Its first project was a housing program for single mothers.
Its second funded scholarships for children raised in poverty.
Its third renovated the laundromat where Sarah had grown up.
Margaret cried when she saw the building.
“You didn't have to do this.”
Sarah smiled.
“Yes, I did.”
David stood beside her.
The wedding was never rescheduled.
Instead, six months later, Sarah and David married in the same church where Margaret had found her.
There were no chandeliers.
No celebrity photographers.
No extravagant decorations.
Just white roses.
A few friends.
Catherine.
Margaret.
And David.
Sarah walked down the aisle wearing a simple dress.
When she reached Margaret, she stopped.
“Mom,” she whispered.
Margaret looked surprised.
“You don't have to call me that for anyone.”
“I know.”
Sarah took her hand.
“I call you that because it's true.”
Then Sarah turned toward Catherine.
“And I love you too.”
Catherine cried.
“I never wanted to take her place.”
“You can't.”
Sarah smiled.
“You gave me life.”
She looked at Margaret.
“She gave me a life.”
Then David took Sarah's hand.
The ceremony began.
But just before the vows, someone appeared at the back of the church.
Richard.
He had been released on bail.
His face was thinner.
His confidence was gone.
He walked toward Sarah.
“I need to speak with you.”
David stepped forward.
Sarah stopped him.
“No.”
She looked at Richard.
“Say what you came to say.”
Richard's eyes filled with tears.
“I made mistakes.”
Sarah stared.
“You stole twenty-eight years from me.”
“I was afraid.”
“You destroyed my mother.”
“I thought I was protecting the family.”
“No.”
Sarah shook her head.
“You were protecting yourself.”
Richard looked at Margaret.
“I didn't know she'd become this.”
Sarah answered:
“She became this because she loved me when you didn't.”
Richard lowered his head.
Then he whispered:
“I'm sorry.”
Sarah's eyes filled.
But she didn't hug him.
She simply said:
“I forgive you.”
Richard looked surprised.
“But I will never trust you.”
Then she turned away.
May you like
Richard left.
And the ceremony continued.
