Chapter 9 - Justice Served in Federal CourtSix months later, the federal courthouse in downtown Chicago was packed to capacity.

The trial of United States v. Grant and Vanessa Mercer had become front-page news across Illinois. The media dubbed it "The Betrayal Blueprint"—a chilling tale of corporate embezzlement, family treason, and a desperate attempt to steal a dying father’s legacy.
I sat in the front row of the gallery, wearing my formal dress uniform adorned with service ribbons, flanked by Harold Bennett and Detective Sergeant Vance.
At the defense table sat Vanessa and Grant.
Gone were the designer suits, the cashmere coats, and the arrogant smirks. Grant looked hollowed out, his prison jumpsuit hanging loosely over his gaunt frame. Vanessa sat staring blankly at the polished mahogany floorboards, her hair unwashed, her face stripped of makeup.
Federal Judge Patricia Henderson adjusted her glasses, looking down from her high bench with stern, unblinking eyes.
"The court has reviewed the complete financial audits, wire fraud ledgers, and the unrefutable testimony regarding the violent assault at the Caldwell residence," Judge Henderson announced, her voice echoing sharply through the silent courtroom.
She paused, letting the heavy silence settle over the room before delivering the final verdict.
"Grant Mercer, for orchestrating a massive Ponzi scheme, pension embezzlement, and aggravated assault, I sentence you to twenty-five years in federal prison without the possibility of parole."
Grant let out a choked gasp, burying his face in his cuffed hands.
Judge Henderson turned her gaze to Vanessa. "Vanessa Mercer, for active conspiracy, wire fraud, perjury, and suborning extortion against your own family, I sentence you to fourteen years in federal prison."
Vanessa’s head snapped up. Tears streamed down her face as she looked directly at me in the front row, opening her mouth to plead, to beg for forgiveness just like we were kids sharing a bedroom.
I didn't flinch. I didn't smile. I simply stared back with absolute, unyielding calm.

The federal marshals stepped forward, placing their hands on both defendants' shoulders.
"Court is adjourned," the bailiff called out.
