Chapter 3 - The Dangerous Proposal"What is that supposed to mean?" Zora’s eyes flashed with sudden, electric fury. She refused to cower, even if her heart was hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. "Are you holding me hostage because I accidentally rolled onto your grass? Because I can assure you, my net worth isn't going to fund your retirement plan."

Viktor let out a low, gravelly chuckle—a sound that resonated deep in his chest. He set his crystal tumbler down on the marble coffee table with a soft clink.

"Hostage? No, Zora. I don't kidnap people who are already dying of starvation and stubbornness," Viktor said, his voice dropping an octave as he pulled a thick, heavy manila folder from beneath his arm and tossed it onto her lap.

Kaiser shifted lazily, resting his massive head back across her feet. Zora’s hands hovered over the folder, hesitant.

"Open it," Viktor commanded gently.

With trembling fingers, Zora untied the cotton string and flipped the cover open. Inside lay a formal, legally binding corporate contract. Her eyes scanned the bold lettering at the top: EXCLUSIVE CREATIVE DIRECTOR & BRANDING CONSULTANT — ROSTVOD GLOBAL ENTERPRISES.

Below it, she saw the compensation figures. Her breath hitched. The retainer fee alone was fifty thousand dollars upfront, with a monthly salary that made her head spin—enough to pay off her back rent, buy a year’s worth of specialized medication, and relocate her entire life out of the reach of eviction notices forever.

"This... this is a mistake," Zora whispered, shaking her head. "I applied for a small freelance branding gig for a boutique firm on Madison. I didn't apply for... whatever this multinational conglomerate is."

"There are no mistakes in my world, Zora," Viktor said, leaning down slightly, resting his hands on the arms of her wheelchair, effectively trapping her in his orbit. His dark, piercing eyes were inches from hers. "My existing corporate fronts need a complete, ruthless rebrand. My enemies are watching every move my current public relations team makes. I need someone brilliant, invisible to law enforcement scrutiny, and tougher than a two-dollar steak. You walked into my garden looking for a lifeline. I'm offering you an anchor."

Zora stared at him, searching his face for a punchline, a hidden camera, or the cruel twist of a sadistic game. But she found only absolute, terrifying sincerity.

"And if I say no?" she whispered.

Viktor straightened up, a cold, dangerous shadow passing over his features—the unmistakable look of a mob boss who controlled docks, politicians, and syndicates.

"Then you walk out of that front door with your eviction notice, your unpaid bills, and your empty pill bottles," Viktor said coldly. "And within forty-eight hours, your landlord will sell your belongings, you'll be sleeping in a municipal shelter, and your spine will completely give out from lack of care. Those are your options, Zora Reid. Work for the most feared man in New York, or let your pride kill you."

The silence in the penthouse grew heavy, thick enough to cut with a knife.

Zora looked down at Kaiser, who let out a soft, sympathetic puff of air. Then she looked at the contract, and finally, up into the scarred, compelling face of Viktor Rostov.

“When life knocks you down, you get back up—whatever that looks like,” Grandma Ruth’s voice echoed in her memory.

Zora reached into her tote bag, pulled out a worn, chewed-up ballpoint pen, flipped the contract to the signature page, and signed her name in bold, unflinching strokes.

"Where do I start, Boss?"
