CHAPTER 3 – The Secret Video That Turned Diego's Promotion Into a Public Nightmare

The silence inside the executive conference room was unbearable.
No one spoke.
No one even reached for the coffee that had just been served.
Every executive's attention was fixed on the thick folder lying open in front of Diego.
NOTICE OF IMMEDIATE PROPERTY REPOSSESSION
The words blurred before his eyes.
"This... this has to be a mistake."
The attorney representing Álvarez Global Holdings calmly folded his hands.
"We don't make mistakes, Mr. Torres."
Diego looked desperately toward his boss.
"Mr. Barrera..."
Ernesto Barrera had always been confident.
Always composed.
But even he looked unsettled now.
"I've known that property for years," Barrera said quietly. "The title has always been confidential."
"It was."
The attorney nodded.
"Because Mrs. Mariana Álvarez requested complete privacy after her marriage."
Diego frowned.
"What does that mean?"
"It means your wife legally purchased that home five years ago."
Silence.
"I don't understand."
"You never paid the mortgage."
Diego stared.
"What?"
"You believed your salary covered the house."
"It did."
The attorney slid another document across the table.
"No."
"It covered your lifestyle."
"The property itself was paid in full... by Mariana."
The room spun.
Every memory came rushing back.
Every time Diego had proudly told friends,
"I bought this house for my family."
Every celebration.
Every toast.
Every compliment.
Every single one...
had been built on a lie.
Not Mariana's.
His.
Across the city...
Mariana stood on the balcony of her grandfather's estate, watching the morning mist drift over endless vineyards.
Mateo chased butterflies through the garden, laughing for the first time in months.
His laughter echoed across the hills.
An elderly housekeeper approached quietly.
"Miss Mariana?"
She smiled gently.
"You can call me Mariana."
The woman shook her head.
"I've waited fifteen years to welcome you home."
She held out a velvet box.
"Your grandfather asked me to return this."
Mariana slowly opened it.
Inside lay a simple silver necklace.
Tiny.
Elegant.
On the back was an engraving.
For my granddaughter. Never hide your light.
Tears welled in her eyes.
Her grandmother had given her that necklace the week before she died.
She thought it had been lost forever.
"No..."
"It was kept safe."
The housekeeper smiled.
"Just like everything else."
Back in Querétaro...
Doña Graciela stormed into Diego's office without knocking.
"Where is she?"
Everyone turned.
She didn't care.
"Tell Mariana to stop acting like a spoiled child."
Diego didn't answer.
"I said—"
"Mom."
His voice was flat.
"Be quiet."
She froze.
"What?"
"For once..."
His eyes slowly met hers.
"...stop talking."
The room fell silent.
It was the first time in forty-three years that Diego had ever spoken to his mother that way.
She laughed nervously.
"Oh, so now this is my fault?"
Diego looked at her.
Then at the folder.
Then back at her.
"Whose idea was it to make Mariana eat in the kitchen?"
Doña Graciela crossed her arms.
"Mine."
"And who spent seven years telling her she wasn't good enough?"
"I was protecting this family."
"No."
His voice cracked.
"You were destroying it."
That afternoon...
The entire company gathered in the ballroom of the Hilton Hotel for Diego's official promotion ceremony.
A giant screen displayed his achievements.
Executives applauded.
Photographers adjusted their cameras.
Mr. Barrera stepped onto the stage.
"It is my honor to announce our new Regional Director..."
Thunderous applause erupted.
"Diego Torres."
Diego slowly walked toward the podium.
His legs felt strangely heavy.
He hadn't heard from Mariana.
He hadn't seen Mateo.
He hadn't slept.
But somehow...
he forced himself to smile.
Just as he reached the microphone—
The ballroom lights flickered.
The giant screen suddenly went black.
A technician frowned.
"That's strange..."
Then...
the screen lit up again.
Only it wasn't displaying the company's presentation anymore.
It was showing a security camera recording.
The date appeared in the corner.
Yesterday. 7:08 P.M.
The Torres dining room.
Every guest watched in confusion.
Then the audio began.
Doña Graciela's unmistakable voice echoed through the ballroom.
"Looking like that, she can eat in the kitchen."
A murmur spread across the crowd.
The video continued.
Diego appeared on screen.
His face pale.
Nervous.
Everyone watched him remain silent.
Then came the sentence that froze the entire ballroom.
"Please... stay in the kitchen tonight."
Gasps erupted.
Someone dropped a wine glass.
It shattered across the marble floor.
Mr. Barrera slowly turned toward Diego.
His expression hardened.
Mrs. Barrera covered her mouth with one hand.
"Oh my God..."
The video wasn't finished.
Mariana appeared.
Calm.
Heartbroken.
Her voice echoed through the speakers.
"Seven years, Diego... Seven years of waiting for you to choose me."
Then...
everyone watched him walk away.
Leaving her behind.
Choosing his mother.
Choosing his career.
Choosing silence.
The recording ended.
Complete silence filled the ballroom.
No applause.
No congratulations.
Nothing.
Mr. Barrera slowly stepped away from the podium.
He looked at Diego for several long seconds.
Then he asked only one question.
"Was that video edited?"
Diego swallowed.
"No."
"Did your wife really cook every dish we ate?"
"...Yes."
"And while we praised your family..."
He paused.
"...she was eating alone in the kitchen?"
Diego lowered his head.
"...Yes."
Another long silence.
Then Mr. Barrera removed the promotion certificate from the podium.
"In thirty-two years of leading this company..."
"I have learned one thing."
"If a man humiliates the person who sacrifices everything for him..."
"He will eventually betray everyone else."
The ballroom became so quiet that every breath could be heard.
Mr. Barrera looked directly into Diego's eyes.
"Your promotion is suspended."
Shock swept across the room.
One executive whispered,
"He just lost everything..."
But Mr. Barrera wasn't finished.
"Effective immediately..."
"You are placed on administrative leave pending an ethics review."
The applause that had been prepared for Diego never came.
Instead...
people quietly stepped away from him.
One by one.
As though his shame were contagious.
Hundreds of kilometers away...
Mariana sat beside a peaceful lake on her grandfather's estate.
She wasn't smiling.
She wasn't celebrating.
She simply watched Mateo skip stones across the water.
Her grandfather joined her.
"You could have destroyed him years ago."
"I know."
"Why didn't you?"
She looked toward the sunset.
"Because I loved him."
"And now?"
A long silence followed.
Finally...
Mariana answered.
"I still love the man I thought he was."
She closed her eyes.
"But that man never existed."
Her grandfather gently placed a hand over hers.
"Then stop mourning someone who was only an illusion."
Just then...
Ricardo Salinas hurried toward them carrying a tablet.
"Miss Mariana..."
"What is it?"
"The first phase is complete."
He turned the screen toward her.
Every major news outlet in Mexico displayed the same headline.
EXECUTIVE'S PROMOTION COLLAPSES AFTER VIRAL VIDEO EXPOSES HOW HIS WIFE WAS HUMILIATED DURING PRIVATE DINNER
Mariana stared silently at the screen.
Then another notification appeared.
It wasn't from a newspaper.
It was from an unknown sender.
Attached was a photograph.
An old photograph.
One she had never seen before.
It showed her father, Eduardo Álvarez...
standing beside a much younger Ernesto Barrera.
The two men were smiling.
Like brothers.
Across the back of the photo, someone had handwritten six chilling words.
"Never trust the Barrera family."
Mariana's breathing stopped.
She slowly turned the photograph over.
A second message had been written beneath it.
"Your father wasn't betrayed by strangers..."
"...He was betrayed by his best friend."
The signature at the bottom made every drop of blood leave her face.
It wasn't her father's handwriting.
May you like
It belonged to someone who was supposed to be dead.
