CHAPTER 5 – They Came to Burn the Truth… But They Didn't Know One Little Boy Had Already Saved It

The mansion alarms screamed through the night.
Red emergency lights flashed across the marble halls.
Outside, five black SUVs tore through the front gates, crushing flower beds that had stood untouched for decades.
Security guards rushed into position.
"Protect Miss Mariana!"
"Seal the east wing!"
"Don't let anyone reach the study!"
Inside the library, Mariana clutched the old VHS tape against her chest.
Her heart pounded so violently she could barely breathe.
Ricardo pulled a handgun from a locked drawer.
"You need to leave."
"I'm not leaving without the tape."
"That's exactly what they're here for."
Another crash echoed through the mansion.
Glass shattered somewhere downstairs.
The sound of men shouting filled the halls.
"They're inside."
Outside...
The attackers wore black clothing with no logos or insignias.
Professional.
Disciplined.
They weren't thieves.
They moved with military precision.
One of them held up a photograph.
Mariana's face.
"The woman gets away, the tape does not."
Another nodded.
"What about the child?"
The leader answered coldly.
"If he sees nothing...
he remembers nothing."
At the same moment...
Mateo woke up in his bedroom.
The alarms frightened him.
He hugged his little green dinosaur tightly.
"Mommy?"
No answer.
The lights flickered.
Then disappeared.
Only moonlight entered through the curtains.
The five-year-old quietly climbed out of bed.
He opened the bedroom door.
The hallway looked frighteningly empty.
Then he heard footsteps.
Heavy.
Running.
Not his mother's.
Downstairs...
The estate's head of security fought two intruders near the grand staircase.
A vase exploded against the wall.
One guard fell.
Another shouted,
"They're heading for the study!"
Ricardo locked the library doors.
"They'll only hold for a minute."
Mariana looked desperately around the room.
"There has to be another exit."
"There is."
He pulled an old globe.
The bookshelf slowly swung open.
A narrow stone passage appeared behind it.
"My grandfather never told me about this."
"He wanted only three people to know it existed."
"Who?"
"Your grandfather."
"Your father."
"...and me."
As they entered the hidden tunnel...
Mariana suddenly stopped.
"My son."
Ricardo froze.
The blood drained from his face.
Mateo.
He was still upstairs.
Without another word...
Mariana turned and ran.
"No!"
Ricardo grabbed her arm.
"They'll kill you!"
"My son is in this house!"
She pulled free.
"I've already lost too much."
Then she disappeared into the darkness.
Upstairs...
Mateo heard voices coming from the hallway.
He hid behind a large grandfather clock.
Two strangers hurried past.
"Search every room."
"The tape has to be here."
The little boy frowned.
Tape?
He suddenly remembered.
Earlier that evening...
Before dinner...
He had wandered into his grandfather's study.
He had found the funny black box.
The VHS tape.
Thinking it was one of Grandpa's old movies...
he had tucked it into his dinosaur backpack because he wanted to ask what it was later.
He still had it.
The attackers were searching the wrong room.
Mariana sprinted through the smoke-filled hallway.
"Mateo!"
No answer.
Tears blurred her vision.
"Mateo!"
Suddenly...
A tiny voice answered.
"Mommy!"
She turned.
Her son emerged from behind the grandfather clock.
She dropped to her knees.
Pulling him into her arms so tightly he could barely breathe.
"I thought..."
She couldn't finish.
"I'm here."
Mateo smiled.
"I wasn't scared."
"You should have been."
"I knew you'd find me."
Before Mariana could speak...
Gunshots echoed downstairs.
Ricardo shouted,
"They're coming!"
They ran toward the hidden passage.
Halfway there...
Three masked men appeared at the opposite end of the hallway.
"There!"
One raised his weapon.
Everything happened in seconds.
Ricardo shoved Mariana and Mateo behind a marble column.
A bullet struck the wall.
Stone exploded into dust.
Another guard tackled one attacker.
The hallway became chaos.
"Go!"
Ricardo screamed.
"Now!"
Mariana grabbed Mateo's hand.
They disappeared into the secret tunnel just as the hidden door closed behind them.
The attackers reached the bookshelf seconds later.
Too late.
The tunnel stretched deep beneath the estate.
Cold.
Dark.
Silent.
Only their footsteps echoed.
Mateo suddenly tugged on Mariana's sleeve.
"Mommy."
"What is it?"
"I have something."
He removed his dinosaur backpack.
Then reached inside.
Mariana stared in disbelief.
The VHS tape.
"You..."
"You were looking for this?"
She nodded slowly.
"Where did you get it?"
"I thought Grandpa forgot it."
Ricardo laughed for the first time all night.
Then immediately stopped.
His smile vanished.
"If the tape wasn't in the study..."
He looked back toward the mansion.
"They came for nothing."
Above them...
The attackers finally broke into Eduardo's study.
They overturned desks.
Destroyed paintings.
Smashed cabinets.
One man held up the empty wooden box.
"It's gone!"
The leader slammed his fist into the wall.
"Search again!"
"We already have."
"There has to be another copy."
"There isn't."
Silence.
The leader slowly removed his mask.
A scar stretched across the left side of his face.
He picked up his phone.
"The mission failed."
A voice answered from the other end.
"...Who has it?"
"We don't know."
Long silence.
Then the voice quietly replied,
"Then Phase Two begins."
The next morning...
Every major television station reported the shocking attack.
BREAKING NEWS
Armed Men Storm Historic Álvarez Estate During Midnight Assault
Police called it an attempted robbery.
But Mariana knew better.
No jewelry had been taken.
No paintings.
No cash.
Only one thing mattered.
The tape.
Meanwhile...
Inside Ernesto Barrera's private office...
A man silently handed him a photograph taken only minutes earlier.
It showed Mariana and Mateo leaving through a hidden tunnel.
Ernesto studied the picture carefully.
Then his eyes fell upon the small dinosaur backpack hanging from Mateo's shoulder.
He zoomed in.
Something black was sticking out from the zipper.
His breathing stopped.
"No..."
He whispered.
"The boy has it."
His assistant looked confused.
"What boy?"
Ernesto slowly stood.
"The child."
"The tape survived because of the child."
He walked toward the window overlooking the city.
For the first time in nearly twenty years...
Fear appeared in his eyes.
Not because Mariana had escaped.
Not because the police were investigating.
But because a five-year-old boy had unknowingly carried the only piece of evidence capable of destroying an empire built on lies.
He turned back toward his assistant.
His voice was colder than ever.
"Find the child."
"Alive?"
Ernesto didn't answer immediately.
After a long silence, he spoke six words that chilled everyone in the room.
"He must never watch that tape."
At the exact same moment...
Hidden inside the underground tunnel, Mateo quietly looked at the old VHS cassette.
Then he smiled innocently.
"Mommy..."
"When we get home..."
"Can we watch Grandpa's movie together?"
Mariana looked at the tape.
Then at her son.
She had no idea...
that the answer hidden inside that old cassette would expose a murder, a stolen fortune...

and a secret about Mateo himself that would change both of their lives forever.
