CHAPTER 4: THE HUSBAND WHO VANISHED… AND THE SECRET HIDDEN IN HIS SAFE

The drive to the police station felt endless.

Rain still covered Mexico City, turning the streets into rivers of gray.

Valeria sat in the passenger seat beside Mariana, her hands clenched tightly in her lap.

One question echoed in her mind:

Why had Julián disappeared?

Twenty-four hours earlier, he had been screaming at her in their apartment.

Now the police couldn't find him.

None of it made sense.

As soon as they entered the station, a detective approached them.

He was tall, with tired eyes and a folder under his arm.

“Ms. Mendoza?”

“Yes.”

“I'm Detective Ricardo Salazar.”

He led them into a small office.

“Your husband left his office this morning after receiving your email. He never arrived home.”

Valeria remained silent.

“We found his car abandoned in a parking garage.”

Mariana frowned.

“Was there an accident?”

“No.”

The detective opened the folder.

“However… we found this.”

He placed several photographs on the desk.

Valeria's stomach dropped.

The pictures showed the inside of Julián's car.

The seats were covered with papers.

Bank statements.

Contracts.

And an empty briefcase.

“What does this mean?” she whispered.

“We think he was trying to remove evidence.”

“Evidence of what?”

The detective looked directly at her.

“Fraud.”

Silence.

“Ms. Mendoza, your husband has been under investigation for nearly six months.”

Valeria looked up in shock.

“What?”

“We suspected him of forging financial documents.”

Her hands trembled.

“The investigation involved your company.”

Mariana cursed under her breath.

“So it was true,” she whispered.

The detective nodded.

“He tried to transfer shares of Mendoza Medical Group into another company's name.”

Valeria's face turned white.

“Whose company?”

The detective slid another document across the table.

At the top was a name.

Robles Investments S.A.

She almost laughed.

The company didn't even exist six months ago.

Then she saw the list of shareholders.

Julián Robles.

Mateo Robles.

And…

Doña Leonor Robles.

Her heart stopped.

“No…”

Mariana closed her eyes.

“They were all involved.”

The detective nodded.

“We believe your husband planned to use forged signatures to gain control of your company.”

Valeria couldn't speak.

This wasn't greed anymore.

This was theft.

A crime.

Then Detective Salazar said something even worse.

“We also found out why he disappeared.”

Both women looked at him.

“He emptied every account he had access to this morning.”

“How much money?” Mariana asked.

“Almost twelve million pesos.”

The room fell silent.

“Twelve… million?” Valeria whispered.

“Yes.”

“That's impossible.”

“Unfortunately, it isn't.”

The detective opened another folder.

“Most of the money came from loans taken under false names.”

“Whose names?”

The detective hesitated.

Then he answered:

“Yours.”

Valeria felt the air leave her lungs.

“No…”

Her voice barely existed.

“He used your personal information.”

“He stole my identity?”

“We believe so.”

The detective nodded.

“And if we don't find him quickly, you'll spend years fighting these debts.”

Suddenly the room seemed to spin.

Twelve million pesos.

Her name.

Her company.

Everything she had built…

placed at risk by the man she once loved.

Then the detective's phone rang.

He listened for several seconds.

His expression changed.

“What is it?” Mariana asked.

He slowly put the phone down.

“We found another location.”

“What location?”

“Your husband's storage unit.”

An hour later, they stood in front of a metal door inside a private warehouse.

The detective inserted a key.

The door rolled open.

Everyone froze.

Inside were dozens of boxes.

Documents.

Computers.

Binders.

And in the center of the room…

a large black safe.

“What is all this?” Valeria whispered.

The detective looked stunned.

“This may be bigger than we thought.”

One officer opened a box.

Inside were passports.

Different names.

Different photographs.

Another box contained fake IDs.

Another contained contracts.

The detective looked pale.

“This isn't ordinary fraud.”

Mariana crossed her arms.

“Then what is it?”

Before he could answer, another officer called out.

“Sir… you need to see this.”

The detective walked toward a shelf.

He picked up a file.

Then looked back at Valeria.

“Ms. Mendoza…”

“What?”

“Do you know a man named Arturo Mendoza?”

Her heart stopped.

“That was my father.”

Silence.

The detective swallowed.

“This file contains information about him.”

Valeria slowly approached.

The folder was old.

Very old.

Her father's name was written across the front.

She opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Bank records.

Letters.

Then she saw something impossible.

A picture of her father…

standing beside a much younger Doña Leonor.

And beside them…

a little boy.

A boy of about ten years old.

Julián.

“What is this?” she whispered.

Nobody answered.

She turned another page.

A handwritten letter fell onto the floor.

She picked it up.

The handwriting belonged to her father.

The date was twenty-eight years earlier.

She began to read.

Then suddenly she stopped breathing.

Mariana looked at her.

“What is it?”

Valeria looked up slowly.

Her face had turned completely white.

The detective stepped forward.

“Ms. Mendoza?”

She couldn't speak.

Her lips trembled.

Finally, she whispered:

“No…”

“What does the letter say?” Mariana asked.

Tears filled Valeria's eyes.

“It says…”

Her voice broke.

“It says my father supported Julián's family for years…”

The room became silent.

Then she looked at the last line.

And nearly collapsed.

Because the sentence read:

If anything ever happens to me, remember this truth:

Julián Robles is not a stranger.

He is your brother.

The entire warehouse went silent.

“No…” Mariana whispered.

The letter slipped from Valeria's hand.

She could barely breathe.

Julián…

Her husband…

The man she had loved.

The man she had married.

The man who had tried to destroy her.

Was actually…

her father's secret son.

And somewhere in Mexico City…

a man was running through the rain with twelve million pesos and a stolen identity.

A man who had just discovered that the woman he betrayed…

wasn't only his wife.

May you like

She was his sister.
