CHAPTER 5: THE SECRET THAT SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN BURIED

For several seconds, nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
The letter lay on the warehouse floor, soaked by a drop of rain that had blown in through the open door.
Valeria stared at it as if the words might change.
They didn't.
Julián Robles is your brother.
“No…” she whispered again.
Her legs gave out.
Mariana caught her before she hit the ground.
“This can't be true,” Mariana said, her own face pale.
But Detective Salazar picked up the letter and read it silently.
Then he looked at Valeria.
“I'm sorry, Ms. Mendoza…”
“Don't call me that right now,” she said, her voice trembling.
“This has to be a mistake.”
She snatched the letter back and read it again.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
Her father's handwriting.
Every curve of every letter.
There was no mistake.
For twenty-eight years, her father had hidden a secret so terrible that it had destroyed two families.
“Why?” she cried.
“Why would he keep this from me?”
Mariana sat beside her.
“I don't know.”
But suddenly, another memory returned.
A memory from years ago.
Her father sitting alone on the balcony.
A glass of whiskey in his hand.
Looking sad.
He had once said:
"Some mistakes are so big that the truth only hurts more."
At the time she hadn't understood.
Now she did.
The detective cleared his throat.
“There may be a way to confirm this.”
He held up another file.
“According to these documents, your father paid for Julián's education.”
“What?”
“He paid his school fees from elementary school through university.”
Mariana looked stunned.
“My mother always said we had an anonymous benefactor…”
Valeria closed her eyes.
It had been her father.
All along.
The man who had secretly cared for another child.
Another family.
Then Detective Salazar said something unexpected.
“But there is something that doesn't make sense.”
“What?” Valeria asked.
“If your father wanted to protect Julián, why was he investigating him?”
Silence.
The detective held up another document.
It was newer.
Only six months old.
The title read:
Private Investigation Report.
Valeria frowned.
“My father died three years ago.”
“Exactly.”
The detective opened the folder.
The client name was listed at the top.
Not Arturo Mendoza.
Another name.
Valeria's blood ran cold.
Client: Valeria Mendoza.
“What?”
Mariana looked confused.
“You hired an investigator?”
“No!”
The detective looked at her carefully.
“You're saying you never ordered this?”
“Never.”
Then who had?
The detective turned another page.
“Whoever hired the investigator used your name.”
Inside were photographs of Julián.
Bank statements.
Records of meetings.
Transactions.
And dozens of pictures with Carla and the little boy.
The investigator had uncovered the affair.
Years ago.
Someone had known.
Someone had been watching Julián.
Then Valeria noticed something strange.
The final page contained a handwritten note.
It wasn't her father's writing.
And it wasn't hers.
The note said:
I tried to warn you.
He is dangerous.
If you are reading this, I failed.
No signature.
No name.
The room suddenly felt colder.
“Who wrote this?” Mariana whispered.
Nobody knew.
Then one of the officers rushed into the warehouse.
“Detective!”
“What is it?”
“We found him.”
Everyone stood.
“Julián?” Valeria asked.
The officer nodded.
“He was trying to leave the city.”
“Is he under arrest?”
The officer hesitated.
“Not exactly.”
A strange feeling settled over Valeria.
“What happened?”
The officer swallowed.
“He had an accident.”
Twenty minutes later, they arrived at a private clinic.
Ironically…
one of Valeria's clinics.
A doctor approached them.
“He's alive.”
Valeria exhaled.
“But barely.”
“What happened?”
“His car crashed into a divider on the highway.”
“Was anyone else injured?”
The doctor looked uncomfortable.
“There was someone with him.”
“Carla?” Valeria asked.
“No.”
“Then who?”
The doctor looked toward the intensive care unit.
“A woman in her sixties.”
Everyone froze.
Mariana's face turned white.
“No…”
At that exact moment, another doctor appeared.
He looked directly at them.
“We need a family member.”
“Why?” Mariana asked.
The doctor took a deep breath.
“The woman regained consciousness for a few minutes.”
“And?”
“She asked for Valeria Mendoza.”
Valeria felt her heart pound.
“Me?”
“Yes.”
“Who is she?”
The doctor hesitated.
Then answered:
“Doña Leonor.”
Silence.
“What?” Mariana whispered.
“She was with Julián?”
The doctor nodded.
“And before she lost consciousness again…”
He looked directly at Valeria.
“She said there is something you need to know.”
Valeria's voice shook.
“What did she say?”
The doctor took a deep breath.
Then repeated the exact words:
Tell Valeria…
Julián never knew they were related.
And tell her…
Arturo Mendoza was not his father.
The world seemed to stop.
“What?”
The doctor continued.
“She said there is one more secret.”
Nobody moved.
The doctor looked at the note in his hand.
Then read the final sentence:
Tell her to open the red envelope hidden inside the safe.
Because the real father…
is still alive.
Silence.
Absolute silence.
Valeria slowly turned toward Detective Salazar.
“The safe…”
The detective's eyes widened.
The black safe in the warehouse.
In all the chaos…
they had never opened it.
And suddenly everyone understood.
The biggest secret had never been in the letter.
It was still locked inside that safe.
Waiting.
And somewhere inside the intensive care unit…
Julián lay unconscious, completely unaware that everything he believed about his life…
May you like
was a lie.
