CHAPTER 1 – The Man Everyone Thought Was Worthless

The rain had been falling for hours.

At an abandoned bus stop on the edge of town, an old man sat alone, soaked to the bone. His faded military jacket clung to his thin frame, and the worn prosthetic leg beneath his pants squeaked every time he shifted his weight.

No one asked if he was cold.

No one asked if he had eaten.

People simply looked away.

Then two teenage boys wandered over, laughing loudly.

"Hey, Grandpa," one of them sneered. "Did the army forget to pick you up?"

The other pointed at the prosthetic.

"I guess they only gave you half your body back."

They burst into laughter.

The old man didn't answer.

He simply stared at the rain collecting on the pavement, gripping the small canvas bag resting beside him.

Inside that bag was everything he owned.

Or so everyone believed.

A biker parked nearby glanced over but said nothing. He had seen scenes like this a hundred times. People loved humiliating those who couldn't fight back.

One of the boys kicked the old man's bag.

It slid across the wet concrete.

"You should be grateful we're giving you entertainment," he laughed.

Still...

The old man never looked up.

His silence somehow made the boys even angrier.

"What? Lost your tongue?"

Another shove.

Another laugh.

A small crowd waiting for the bus watched the scene unfold, but not a single person stepped forward.

Some even smiled.

To them, he was just another forgotten veteran.

Another broken man waiting for life to end.

None of them noticed the tears mixing with the rain on his weathered face.

Because he wasn't crying over the insults.

He was remembering.

Exactly thirty-five years earlier...

He had carried two wounded soldiers across enemy fire after losing his own leg.

He had refused to leave anyone behind.

He had received the nation's highest military honor.

Yet when the cameras disappeared...

So did everyone else.

His wife passed away.

His son vanished without a trace.

His pension barely covered medicine.

Eventually...

The world forgot his name.

Except for one person.

Miles away, inside a sleek black SUV speeding down the highway, a woman in an expensive business suit stared at an old photograph.

In the photo, a much younger soldier smiled proudly despite standing on one leg.

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Find him," she whispered.

"I don't care what it costs."

"I've been looking for Colonel Samuel Hayes for twenty years."

At that exact moment...

The black SUV turned onto the same road leading toward the lonely bus stop.

Back under the rusted shelter, the boys were still laughing.

One reached for the old man's military medals hanging from his jacket.

"These are probably fake anyway."

As his fingers touched the medal...

The old man finally lifted his head.

His tired eyes locked onto the teenager's face.

Then he quietly spoke six words.

"That medal cost twelve good men."

The smile instantly disappeared from the boy's face.

But before anyone could react...

Three black SUVs appeared through the rain.

They stopped directly in front of the bus shelter.

And every person standing there suddenly realized...

May you like

The old man they had been mocking was not who they thought he was.

To be continued...
