CHAPTER 5 – The Man Who Should Have Been Dead Pulled the Trigger

The vault fell silent.

No one moved.

No one even breathed.

Captain Richard Kane stood in the doorway, his rifle aimed directly at Emily.

Samuel felt twenty-five years younger.

Not because his body had changed...

But because the nightmare had returned.

"You died," Samuel whispered.

Kane smiled.

"So did you... according to the government."

Emily looked between the two men.

"You know him?"

Samuel never took his eyes off Kane.

"He was my commanding officer."

"The man I trusted more than anyone."

Kane laughed.

"And that was your biggest mistake."

Behind him, masked gunmen secured the hallway.

Every exit was blocked.

The surviving bodyguards were disarmed within seconds.

Emily quietly slipped the cassette tape into the inside pocket of her jacket while everyone focused on Kane.

Only Samuel noticed.

He gave the slightest nod.

Don't let them see.

Kane slowly walked toward them.

"You've always been predictable, Colonel."

"I knew you'd come for the box."

Samuel clenched his fists.

"You murdered Michael."

Kane shrugged.

"He asked too many questions."

Emily gasped.

"My father..."

Kane interrupted.

"Your father wasn't supposed to die."

"He simply refused to hand over the evidence."

Samuel's blood ran cold.

"So the helicopter..."

"I sabotaged it."

The words echoed through the vault.

Even Kane's own men looked uncomfortable hearing the confession.

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

"You killed my parents."

"No," Kane replied coldly.

"I killed patriots."

"They chose loyalty over survival."

Samuel suddenly stepped forward.

"You'll never leave here."

Kane smiled.

"You still think like a soldier."

"But this isn't a battlefield."

"It's business."

He snapped his fingers.

One of the masked men dragged an elderly bank employee into the room.

The terrified woman was crying.

"Please..."

"I have grandchildren..."

Kane pressed a pistol against her head.

"Colonel."

"You have one choice."

"Give me the notebook."

"Or she dies."

Samuel looked down at the bloodstained military journal.

It contained names.

Dates.

Coordinates.

Enough evidence to destroy powerful people.

But could he sacrifice an innocent woman?

Emily whispered,

"Don't."

"If he gets that notebook..."

"My parents died for nothing."

Samuel closed his eyes.

For decades he had carried guilt.

Regret.

Loss.

Now another life rested in his hands.

Kane began counting.

"Three..."

The old woman sobbed.

"Two..."

Samuel's grip tightened.

"One..."

Before Kane could pull the trigger—

BANG!

A shot echoed through the vault.

Everyone froze.

Kane staggered backward.

Blood spread across his shoulder.

"What the—"

Another shot.

One of Kane's gunmen collapsed.

The lights flickered back on.

A dozen heavily armed tactical officers stormed into the vault from a hidden service tunnel.

"FEDERAL AGENTS! DROP YOUR WEAPONS!"

Gunfire erupted.

The vault became chaos.

Samuel threw Emily behind a steel pillar.

Bullets ricocheted off the concrete walls.

Within seconds, several of Kane's men were captured.

Others fell.

But Kane...

Kane disappeared into the smoke.

When the shooting stopped, an FBI commander walked toward Samuel.

He removed his helmet.

"I'm Special Agent Marcus Cole."

"We've been hunting Richard Kane for eighteen years."

Samuel frowned.

"Then how did he know we'd come here?"

Cole's expression changed instantly.

He looked around the room.

Then slowly whispered,

"We told no one."

Silence.

Every agent looked at one another.

Someone inside the FBI had leaked the operation.

Before anyone could speak again...

Emily reached into her jacket.

Her face turned pale.

The cassette tape...

...was gone.

Samuel's heart sank.

Kane had escaped.

And he hadn't run away empty-handed.

Then Samuel noticed something lying on the floor where Kane had been standing.

A single playing card.

The Ace of Spades.

On the back, written in black ink, were six chilling words:

"See you at the White House."

Samuel stared at the card.

Emily looked at him in disbelief.

If Kane was telling the truth...

The conspiracy didn't end with corrupt soldiers.

May you like

It reached all the way to the highest office in America.

To be continued...
