CHAPTER 2 — The Secret Behind The Salgado Name

The entire lobby of the Palacio Reforma Hotel had fallen into complete silence.

Not the uncomfortable silence of people waiting.

Not the polite silence of a luxury place.

A heavy silence.

The kind that comes when everyone realizes they have made a terrible mistake.

A few minutes earlier, Martín Salgado had been treated like a man who had entered the wrong building.

Now, the general manager of the hotel was standing in front of him with his head lowered.

And everyone wanted to know why.

Brenda, the receptionist who had mocked him, stared at the scene in disbelief.

Her hands were frozen over the keyboard.

Ivonne no longer had that arrogant smile on her face.

The same man they had judged by his clothes…

Was someone the hotel manager respected.

Deeply.

“Your father saved this hotel twenty years ago.”

The words continued to echo in Martín’s mind.

“My father?”

He looked at Alejandro Valdés.

“I think there must be some mistake.”

The manager slowly shook his head.

“No mistake, sir.”

Alejandro looked around the lobby.

Then at the employees.

“Actually… I’m surprised you were not informed before arriving.”

Martín frowned.

“Informed about what?”

Alejandro took a deep breath.

Because what he was about to reveal was not just about a hotel.

It was about a family secret.

“Twenty years ago,” Alejandro began, “this hotel was almost destroyed.”

Everyone listened.

Even the guests nearby stopped pretending not to pay attention.

“The Palacio Reforma was facing bankruptcy. The owners at the time had lost everything after a financial crisis.”

Alejandro looked toward the elegant walls.

“The hotel was supposed to be sold.”

Martín listened carefully.

He had never heard this story.

“My father never mentioned anything like this.”

Alejandro nodded.

“Because your father was not the kind of man who looked for recognition.”

That sentence hit Martín.

Because it sounded exactly like him.

“Your father’s name was Ricardo Salgado.”

Martín’s eyes widened slightly.

The name brought memories.

A strict man.

A quiet man.

A father who rarely spoke about his emotions.

A father who believed actions mattered more than words.

Ricardo Salgado had died five years earlier.

And even after his death, Martín still struggled to understand him.

They had loved each other.

But they had never been close.

There were too many things left unsaid.

Too many conversations that never happened.

Too many questions without answers.

“Your father came here when the hotel owners were desperate,” Alejandro continued.

“He didn’t buy the hotel.”

Martín looked confused.

“Then what did he do?”

Alejandro smiled sadly.

“He believed in it.”

The manager pointed around.

“He invested in the renovation. He helped restructure the debts. He introduced new management strategies.”

“He could have taken control of this entire building.”

A pause.

“But he refused.”

“Why?”

Alejandro looked directly at Martín.

“Because your father said something I will never forget.”

The manager’s voice softened.

“He said…”

‘A place that creates memories should belong to the people who love it, not only the people who can afford it.’

Nobody spoke.

Even Brenda lowered her eyes.

Martín looked down at Sofía.

His daughter was still sleeping peacefully.

She had no idea that the father she was resting against carried a story bigger than anyone knew.

“My father never told me.”

Alejandro nodded.

“That was Ricardo Salgado.”

“He helped people quietly.”

“He didn’t want his name on walls.”

“He didn’t want praise.”

“He simply wanted to know that something beautiful would remain.”

Martín swallowed.

For years, he had thought his father was cold.

Distant.

Emotionless.

But maybe…

Maybe he had simply loved differently.

Then Alejandro turned toward Brenda.

His expression changed.

“Ms. Castillo.”

Brenda immediately stood straighter.

“Yes, sir.”

“Do you remember what you said to Mr. Salgado?”

Her face became pale.

The entire lobby watched.

“I… I apologize.”

“That is not an answer.”

Brenda lowered her head.

“I treated him unfairly.”

Alejandro looked at Ivonne.

“And you?”

Ivonne’s confidence disappeared.

“I’m sorry, sir.”

The manager’s voice remained calm.

“An apology is not enough when someone is humiliated in front of others.”

The words cut through the lobby.

“Luxury is not measured by marble floors, expensive clothes, or a person’s appearance.”

“Luxury is how you treat someone when you think they cannot give you anything in return.”

Nobody moved.

Then Doña Lupita stepped forward.

“Mr. Valdés…”

The manager smiled warmly.

“Lupita.”

“You were the only person who helped him.”

The old housekeeper shook her head.

“I only did what anyone should do.”

Alejandro smiled.

“And that is exactly why you are the kind of person this hotel needs.”

A few minutes later, Martín was escorted toward the private elevator.

But before he entered, he stopped.

“Mr. Valdés.”

“Yes, sir?”

“Why did my reservation say not to reveal my identity?”

The manager hesitated.

For the first time that night…

He looked nervous.

“There is something else you don’t know.”

Martín stared at him.

“What?”

Alejandro glanced at Sofía.

Then quietly said:

“Your father left specific instructions.”

Martín’s heart began beating faster.

“What instructions?”

The manager reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a small black envelope.

Old.

Sealed.

With one name written on it.

Martín.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

His father’s handwriting.

Martín froze.

“My father wrote this?”

Alejandro nodded.

“He told me to give it to you only when you came to this hotel.”

“Why?”

The manager looked at the envelope.

“Because your father knew there would come a day when you needed to understand the truth.”

Martín slowly opened the envelope.

Inside was a single letter.

Only a few lines.

His hands trembled as he read:

“My son,

If you are reading this, it means you finally came back to the place where our family’s story changed.

There are things I never told you because I wanted to protect you.

But protection sometimes becomes a burden when the truth remains hidden.

Go to Room 1207.

There you will find what I left behind.”

Martín stopped breathing for a second.

Room 1207.

The presidential suite.

The room where he was supposed to stay.

The room reserved two weeks earlier.

The room his father had mentioned twenty years ago.

“Mr. Salgado?”

Martín looked up.

Alejandro was watching him carefully.

“Is everything okay?”

Martín folded the letter.

But before he could answer…

Sofía suddenly woke up.

“Daddy…”

“Yes, princess?”

She rubbed her eyes.

“Are we at the hotel where Mommy wanted to come?”

Martín’s expression softened.

“Yes.”

The little girl looked around.

“Do you think Mommy can see us?”

Martín smiled sadly.

“I think she would be very happy.”

But neither of them noticed…

A woman standing near the entrance had been watching them the entire time.

A woman wearing a black coat.

A woman who recognized the Salgado name instantly.

Her face changed when she saw the little girl.

Because she knew something Martín didn’t.

Something hidden for years.

She whispered:

“Ricardo…”

Her eyes filled with fear.

“He never told his son about the inheritance.”

Then she looked at Sofía.

“And now they’re here.”

The woman quickly took out her phone.

She made a call.

The first words she said were:

“Martín Salgado has returned.”

A pause.

Then:

“You need to come to Mexico City immediately.”

Because the truth about the Salgado family…

May you like

Was only beginning.

TO BE CONTINUED…
