CHAPTER 4 — The Enemy Who Knew His Father’s Secrets

The phone slipped slightly from Martín Salgado’s hand.

The unknown voice was gone.

But the threat remained.

Like a shadow.

Like a warning.

“You will pay for what he left behind.”

Those words repeated inside his mind.

For years, Martín had lived a simple life.

He never chased power.

He never cared about luxury.

He worked hard, raised his daughter, and tried to keep the promise he made to Mariana.

A peaceful life.

A life where Sofía could grow up knowing love.

But now, everything had changed.

Because someone had just told him that his father’s death was not an accident.

And someone had broken into a presidential suite inside one of Mexico’s most secure hotels…

Just to steal a letter.

“Who was that?”

Claudia’s voice broke the silence.

Martín turned toward her.

“I was hoping you could tell me.”

The woman looked away.

For a moment, she seemed like she wanted to leave.

But then she looked at Sofía.

The little girl was holding her father’s hand tightly.

Scared.

Confused.

Claudia sighed.

“Martín…”

“What?”

“There are things about your family that you were never supposed to discover.”

His eyes narrowed.

“Why?”

“Because your father wanted you safe.”

Martín laughed bitterly.

“Safe?”

He pointed around the room.

“Someone just threatened me. Someone stole my father’s last message. And you’re telling me he was protecting me?”

Claudia lowered her head.

“Yes.”

“By lying to me my entire life?”

The question hurt more than he expected.

Because deep down…

That was what he had always felt.

That his father had kept him outside a locked door.

A door he was never allowed to open.

Claudia walked toward the window.

Below them, Mexico City shined.

Thousands of lights.

Thousands of lives.

But inside Suite 1207…

Everything felt dark.

“Your father discovered something ten years ago,” she said.

“What?”

“A betrayal.”

Martín waited.

But Claudia hesitated.

“From someone close to him.”

“Who?”

She looked at him.

“I don’t know if I should tell you.”

Martín stepped forward.

“You came here knowing someone was after me.”

“You knew my father’s secret.”

“You know why he died.”

His voice became colder.

“So now you’re going to tell me everything.”

Claudia looked at him.

And finally nodded.

“Your father had a business partner.”

“His name was Esteban Rivas.”

Martín searched his memory.

The name sounded familiar.

“Rivas…”

“Yes.”

Claudia continued.

“He was Ricardo’s closest friend. They built everything together.”

“The investments.”

“The hotel agreements.”

“The foundation.”

Martín frowned.

“Then why would he betray him?”

Claudia’s expression became painful.

“Because your father discovered Esteban was stealing from the company.”

Martín froze.

“How much?”

“Millions.”

The room went silent.

“But that’s impossible,” Martín said.

“My father trusted him.”

“That was the problem.”

Claudia looked at the floor.

“Your father trusted people too much.”

Martín sat down.

His mind was spinning.

His father…

The man he thought was distant…

Had spent years fighting battles he never knew existed.

“Why didn’t he tell me?”

Claudia answered softly:

“Because Esteban threatened him.”

Martín looked up.

“What?”

“He told your father that if he exposed him, he would destroy everyone he loved.”

A chill ran through Martín.

“Everyone?”

Claudia nodded.

“Your mother.”

“You.”

“And later…”

Her eyes moved toward Sofía.

“Your daughter.”

Martín immediately pulled Sofía closer.

The protective instinct of a father took over.

“Why would he go after my daughter?”

“Because Esteban knew Ricardo’s weakness.”

“What?”

Claudia whispered:

“Love.”

A sudden knock interrupted them.

Both turned.

Martín immediately stood.

“Who is it?”

A voice answered.

“Room service.”

Claudia’s face changed.

“No.”

“What?”

“That’s not possible.”

Martín looked confused.

“Why?”

“Because you didn’t order anything.”

The door opened slightly.

A waiter stood outside with a silver tray.

“Mr. Salgado, this was sent for you.”

Martín didn’t move.

“By whom?”

The waiter looked uncomfortable.

“Anonymous.”

Claudia stepped back.

“Don’t touch it.”

The waiter left quickly.

Martín stared at the tray.

On top was a single envelope.

Not old.

Not hidden.

Fresh.

Waiting.

His name was written on it.

Martín Salgado.

“No.”

Claudia’s voice trembled.

“What?”

“He wants you to open it.”

“Who?”

She looked terrified.

“Esteban.”

Martín stared at the envelope.

For a few seconds, he considered throwing it away.

But then he remembered something.

His father’s letter.

“When the truth remains hidden, it becomes a burden.”

Slowly…

He opened it.

Inside was only one photograph.

A photograph that made his blood freeze.

It showed:

His father.

Esteban Rivas.

And…

Mariana.

His wife.

Standing together.

Years before Martín met her.

“No…”

The word escaped his lips.

Claudia looked at the picture.

Then covered her mouth.

“What is it?”

Martín couldn’t answer.

Because written on the back of the photo were six words:

“Ask your wife who I was.”

His hands began shaking.

Mariana.

The woman he loved.

The mother of his child.

The woman he believed he knew completely.

A horrible question entered his mind.

A question he never wanted to ask.

What connection did his dead wife have with the man who destroyed his father’s life?

Then…

The hotel television suddenly turned on.

Static filled the screen.

A man appeared.

Older.

Confident.

Cold eyes.

Martín recognized him immediately.

The name from his father’s past.

Esteban Rivas.

The man smiled.

“Hello, Martín.”

Nobody moved.

“I know you have many questions.”

He leaned closer to the camera.

“But before you judge me…”

“You should know the truth about Mariana.”

Martín felt his heart stop.

“Because your wife…”

“Was never just a woman caught in this story.”

A pause.

“She was the reason this entire war began.”

The screen went black.

And for the first time in years…

Martín wondered if the biggest secret his father hid…

Was not about money.

Not about the hotel.

Not about business.

May you like

But about the woman he loved most.

TO BE CONTINUED…
