THEY MOCKED THE WIDOW FOR INHERITING 30 ACRES OF WORTHLESS ROCK… UNTIL THE DRY CANYON EXPOSED A SECRET THAT MADE AN ENTIRE TOWN PANIC CHAPTER 4 – The Man They Buried Wasn't Mateo

The underground river exploded through the cavern with the force of a dam collapsing.
Water slammed into the ancient mine shafts, ripping away rotten support beams and smashing abandoned carts against the walls.
Commander Vargas screamed orders that vanished beneath the roar.
"Get out!"
"Forget the woman!"
"Save yourselves!"
But panic had already taken control.
Two armed men disappeared beneath the raging current.
Another reached for a ledge, only to have the rock break away in his hands.
The canyon had become a trap.
The same trap that had swallowed countless innocent lives.
"Hold on!"
Elena wrapped one arm around Diego and grabbed a thick iron chain hanging from the ceiling with the other.
The freezing water surged past them, carrying shattered wood, rusted tools...
And bones.
Human bones.
Skulls rolled across the stone floor before vanishing into the torrent.
Long-buried skeletons surfaced from collapsed chambers the flood had finally exposed.
Diego buried his face against Elena's shoulder.
"They're waking up..."
he whispered.
Elena knew better.
The dead weren't waking.
The truth was.
After several terrifying minutes, the current weakened enough for them to climb onto higher ground.
The cavern was almost unrecognizable.
Walls had collapsed.
New passages had opened.
Crates had been torn apart, scattering old records and rusted equipment everywhere.
Then Elena saw something glinting beneath the mud.
A silver wristwatch.
She recognized it instantly.
It had belonged to Mateo.
She had given it to him on their fifth wedding anniversary.
With trembling hands, she picked it up.
The glass was cracked.
The leather strap had rotted away.
But the initials engraved on the back were unmistakable.
M.E.M.
Mateo Ernesto Morales.
Tears filled her eyes.
Had he died here after all?
Was this where they had hidden his body?
Nearby, another object caught her attention.
A weatherproof metal case had been wedged between two rocks.
Its latch had broken open during the flood.
Inside were sealed evidence bags.
Each carefully labeled.
Photographs.
Bullets.
Blood samples.
Police reports.
Commander Vargas hadn't just buried people.
He had buried investigations.
At the very bottom lay a cassette recorder sealed inside plastic.
Miraculously, it remained dry.
Beside it was a note written in Mateo's handwriting.
"If you find this, play it only when you are safe."
Elena slipped it into her satchel.
A sudden cough echoed nearby.
Someone was still alive.
Commander Vargas struggled beneath a collapsed timber, his right leg pinned under a massive beam.
His rifle was gone.
His uniform soaked with mud and blood.
For the first time since Elena had known him...
He looked afraid.
Their eyes met.
He stared at the watch in her hand.
His face drained of color.
"No..."
he whispered.
"That isn't possible."
Elena stepped closer.
"You murdered my husband."
Vargas closed his eyes.
"I didn't kill Mateo."
The words hit her like another landslide.
"You're lying."
"I swear..."
"I wanted him arrested."
"Rufino wanted him dead."
The commander winced in pain.
"He wouldn't listen."
"He found something none of us understood."
"What did he find?"
Vargas looked toward the rushing river.
"Not treasure."
"Not gold."
"He found proof that the entire valley had been poisoned."
Elena frowned.
"Poisoned?"
"For twenty years," Vargas said weakly, "illegal chemicals were dumped into the underground water to force farmers off their land."
"The crops failed."
"The wells dried up."
"The families sold everything."
"Rufino bought the land for almost nothing."
"The canyon wasn't worthless."
"It controlled the water beneath the entire region."
Elena felt sick.
The drought that had destroyed hundreds of families...
Had never been natural.
It had been created.
Before she could ask another question, Vargas grabbed her wrist with surprising strength.
"Listen carefully."
"Héctor isn't working for Rufino."
"Rufino works for Héctor."
Elena froze.
"What?"
Vargas coughed violently.
"Your husband figured it out too late."
"Héctor planned everything."
"He convinced Mateo to buy the land."
"He needed someone honest to uncover the tunnels."
"Then..."
"He intended to silence him."
Nothing made sense anymore.
Héctor had acted like a greedy fool.
But behind that mask...
He had been orchestrating everything.
A gunshot echoed through the cavern.
Commander Vargas's body jerked violently.
A crimson stain spread across his chest.
Elena spun around.
Standing at the entrance of the collapsed tunnel...
Holding a hunting rifle...
Was Héctor.
His expensive boots were splattered with mud, but his smile remained calm.
Cold.
Almost relieved.
"I warned Vargas years ago..."
he said as he slowly reloaded.
"Loose ends always become problems."
He looked directly at Elena.
"I offered you money."
"I offered you an easy life."
"But you insisted on digging."
He raised the rifle.
"You should have stayed a grieving widow."
Elena instinctively pushed Diego behind a boulder.
Héctor took another step forward.
Then another.
Until he was only twenty feet away.
He smiled.
"You know the funniest part?"
"The body in that sealed coffin..."
He paused just long enough to enjoy the horror on Elena's face.
"...was never Mateo."
Everything inside Elena stopped.
The world seemed to fall silent.
Even the roaring river faded from her ears.
If the man she buried wasn't her husband...
Then where was Mateo?
Héctor's smile widened.
"You've been mourning the wrong man for sixteen days."
He slowly aimed the rifle at her heart.
"And Mateo is exactly where I left him."
