CHAPTER 2 — The Baby Who Never Died

Mariana Villaseñor didn't cry.

Not when Santiago lied to her.

Not when the doctors claimed cancer had stolen her future.

Not even when Abril Luján walked into her hospital room carrying the child that now seemed destined to replace everything Mariana had lost.

She simply waited.

Sometimes revenge wasn't born from rage.

Sometimes it was born from silence.

For the next forty-eight hours, Mariana played the role everyone expected.

The broken wife.

The grateful patient.

The woman too devastated to ask questions.

Every nurse who entered the room heard the same soft voice.

"Thank you."

"I'm feeling a little better."

"I just need time."

Even Santiago relaxed.

He kissed her forehead every morning before leaving for his office.

He answered phone calls in the hallway.

He signed paperwork.

He smiled at visitors.

Everyone praised him.

"You're an incredible husband."

"No man could have done more."

Santiago accepted every compliment with humble eyes.

Inside, he believed he had already won.

He had no idea Mariana had stopped sleeping.

Every night she replayed the conversation she had overheard.

"Remove the uterus."

"My future heir is already growing inside another woman."

But one sentence refused to leave her mind.

"Emergency procedure."

If the surgery had truly been an emergency...

Why had Santiago arranged it before she was even unconscious?

The answer was obvious.

Because the operation had never been about saving her.

It had been about controlling her.

On the third night, something unexpected happened.

A nurse Mariana had never seen before quietly entered the room just after midnight.

She couldn't have been older than twenty-five.

Her name badge read:

Lucía Herrera.

She looked around nervously before closing the door.

"Mrs. Ramírez..."

Her voice trembled.

"I shouldn't be here."

Mariana remained silent.

Lucía reached into her uniform pocket.

"There isn't much time."

She placed a tiny folded piece of paper beneath Mariana's blanket.

Then she whispered words that made Mariana's heart stop.

"Your baby cried."

Mariana froze.

"What...?"

"I heard him."

"No..."

"You don't understand."

Lucía's eyes filled with tears.

"I was assigned to the neonatal unit that night."

"There was a little boy."

"He was alive."

Mariana grabbed her wrist.

"My son?"

Lucía nodded.

"I only saw him for a few minutes."

"He had a blue identification bracelet."

"The surname said Ramírez."

Mariana could barely breathe.

"They told us he had breathing difficulties."

"Then two men in suits arrived."

"They took him."

"No paperwork."

"No incubator."

"No explanation."

"And after that..."

"Every record disappeared."

Mariana's world shattered for the second time.

Not because her son had died.

Because he hadn't.

Someone had stolen him.

Before Mariana could ask another question, footsteps echoed outside the room.

Lucía immediately stepped back.

"I never came here."

"If anyone asks..."

"...you've never met me."

She hurried out.

The folded paper remained hidden beneath Mariana's blanket.

With shaking hands, Mariana opened it.

Only one sentence was written.

Room B-17. Security Archive.

The next morning Santiago arrived carrying breakfast.

He looked cheerful.

Too cheerful.

"The doctors think you can go home tomorrow."

Mariana forced a weak smile.

"That's wonderful."

He kissed her hand.

"I'm thinking we should spend a few weeks in our beach house."

"No stress."

"No business."

"Just the two of us."

Mariana looked into his eyes.

The same eyes she had loved for twelve years.

Now they looked like those of a stranger.

She smiled anyway.

"I'd like that."

For the first time since the surgery...

Santiago relaxed completely.

That afternoon he left for an important board meeting.

The moment the elevator doors closed...

Mariana got out of bed.

Every step hurt.

But pain no longer mattered.

She wrapped herself in a doctor's coat hanging near the bathroom.

A surgical mask covered half her face.

Then she quietly walked through the hallway.

No one stopped her.

Hospital Archive B-17 was hidden in the basement.

Unlike the luxurious private rooms upstairs...

This floor smelled of dust and old paper.

Metal shelves stretched from wall to wall.

Boxes filled with patient files lined every aisle.

A security door blocked the final corridor.

Mariana's heart sank.

Locked.

She had come too far.

Then she heard a voice behind her.

"You shouldn't be here."

She spun around.

It wasn't security.

It was Lucía.

Without saying a word, the young nurse pulled a stolen access card from her pocket.

"You have exactly five minutes."

The door clicked open.

Inside the archive room stood dozens of computer monitors connected to years of surveillance recordings.

Lucía quickly searched the system.

"Delivery Ward."

"Three nights ago."

"There."

The screen flickered to life.

Mariana held her breath.

She saw herself being rushed into surgery.

Doctors.

Nurses.

Chaos.

Minutes later another camera appeared.

The neonatal unit.

A tiny baby lay inside an incubator.

Alive.

His little hands moved.

His chest rose and fell.

Tears streamed down Mariana's face.

"My son..."

Then the video changed everything.

At exactly 4:12 a.m., Santiago entered the neonatal unit.

He wasn't alone.

Beside him stood Abril Luján.

And an elderly man Mariana had never seen before.

The stranger handed Santiago a black briefcase.

Santiago opened it.

Stacks of cash.

The elderly man smiled.

Then a nurse carried the baby toward them.

Abril gently touched the infant's cheek.

Santiago looked around to make sure no one was watching.

He took the baby into his own arms...

...and walked out of the hospital.

Alive.

Mariana felt her knees give way.

Everything had been planned.

The fake death.

The fake diagnosis.

The hysterectomy.

Her son's disappearance.

None of it had been an accident.

It had been a business transaction.

Then Lucía gasped.

"Oh no..."

"What is it?"

Lucía pointed toward another monitor.

The hospital entrance.

A black SUV had just stopped outside.

Four men wearing dark suits stepped out.

None of them were police.

None carried medical equipment.

One of them held Mariana's photograph.

The elevator display showed they were heading upward.

Toward her hospital room.

Toward the woman who had just discovered the truth.

Lucía's face turned pale.

"They know you're missing."

Mariana looked once more at the screen showing her baby alive.

Then she made a decision.

She wasn't leaving this hospital as a victim.

She was leaving as a mother.

Even if every member of the Ramírez family had to fall to bring her son home.
