CHAPTER 3 — The Child Worth Billions

The tunnel beneath the hospital smelled of damp concrete, rust, and forgotten secrets.

Mariana could barely breathe.

Every step sent a burning pain through the fresh stitches across her abdomen.

Behind her, the voices grew louder.

"Search every exit!"

"Mr. Ramírez wants her alive!"

Alive.

Not dead.

That frightened Mariana even more.

If Santiago wanted her alive, it meant she still had something he needed.

Father Gabriel grabbed her arm.

"Faster."

"I can't..."

"You have to."

"If they catch you now, you'll never see your son again."

Those words gave Mariana enough strength to keep moving.

The tunnel finally opened into an abandoned parking garage several blocks away from the hospital.

Rain poured over Mexico City.

Thunder rolled across the skyline.

Father Gabriel led her toward an old gray pickup truck that looked as though it had survived decades of hard labor.

Mariana climbed inside just as black SUVs burst out of the alley behind them.

"They found us!"

Father Gabriel slammed the accelerator.

The old truck roared forward.

Behind them, three luxury SUVs gave chase through the rain-soaked streets.

Inside the first SUV...

Santiago Ramírez wasn't panicking.

He was smiling.

One of his bodyguards glanced into the rearview mirror.

"Sir... should we stop them before they leave the city?"

Santiago slowly adjusted his expensive cufflinks.

"No."

The guard frowned.

"What?"

"Let Father Gabriel run."

"He'll take Mariana exactly where I need her to go."

The bodyguard looked confused.

"You knew he'd contact her?"

"I've known for twenty years."

Santiago calmly poured himself a glass of mineral water.

"The old man thinks he's protecting a secret."

"What he doesn't realize..."

"...is that he's leading us straight to it."

Meanwhile...

The rain hammered against the truck's windshield.

Mariana held the leather briefcase tightly against her chest.

Inside were documents capable of destroying the Ramírez family.

But none of them mattered as much as one question.

"My son..."

Father Gabriel kept his eyes on the road.

"He's alive."

"Where?"

"I don't know."

Mariana stared at him.

"You don't know?"

"I know who took him."

"But not where they hid him."

She felt despair creeping back into her chest.

"You said you could help me."

"I can."

"But first..."

"...you need to understand why this happened."

Forty-five minutes later, they arrived at a lonely monastery hidden high in the mountains outside the city.

The building looked centuries old.

Stone walls.

Wooden doors.

No signs.

No electricity.

Only candles.

An elderly nun welcomed them without asking questions.

"They're waiting."

Mariana frowned.

"They?"

The nun silently pointed toward the library.

Inside sat three elderly men and one woman.

Each had gray hair.

Each looked well into their seventies.

Father Gabriel removed his hat.

"They were your mother's closest friends."

Mariana froze.

"My mother died eighteen years ago."

The elderly woman nodded slowly.

"Yes."

"But before Elena died..."

"...she knew this day would come."

The woman placed a dusty wooden box on the table.

Its brass lock had Mariana's family crest engraved into it.

Father Gabriel handed Mariana a tiny golden key.

"The letter beneath your pillow wasn't the real inheritance."

"This is."

Mariana inserted the key.

Click.

The box opened.

Inside lay dozens of old photographs.

Newspaper clippings.

Birth certificates.

A worn velvet pouch.

And one small VHS tape labeled in black ink.

FOR MARIANA—ONLY IF THEY TAKE YOUR CHILD.

Mariana's hands began trembling.

"They knew..."

Father Gabriel nodded.

"Your mother predicted everything."

An old television and VHS player sat in the corner.

Father Gabriel inserted the tape.

Static filled the screen.

Then...

A younger Elena Villaseñor appeared.

She looked directly into the camera.

If Mariana hadn't known better, she would have believed her mother was alive.

"My dearest Mariana..."

"If you're watching this..."

"...they've already found you."

Tears streamed down Mariana's face.

"I prayed this day would never come."

"But the Ramírez family has always protected power with blood."

"They'll smile while they destroy you."

"They'll cry while they steal from you."

"And they'll convince the whole world they're the victims."

Mariana covered her mouth.

Her mother's voice continued.

"If they've taken your baby..."

"...then the prophecy has begun."

Everyone in the room exchanged nervous glances.

Prophecy?

Elena sighed deeply.

"Our families have hidden one truth for nearly seventy years."

"The first-born son born from the union of the Villaseñor and original Ramírez bloodlines becomes the sole legal heir to assets placed in an international trust."

Mariana stared at the screen.

"The trust is worth more than three billion dollars."

Silence filled the room.

Three...

Billion...

Dollars.

Elena continued.

"Not even Santiago knows the entire truth."

"He believes he married you for love."

"But others arranged your marriage long before either of you met."

Mariana felt the room spinning.

"No..."

She whispered.

"My marriage..."

"...was planned?"

Father Gabriel lowered his eyes.

"Yes."

Suddenly—

The VHS image flickered violently.

The screen turned black.

Then another face appeared.

Not Elena's.

Santiago's.

Older.

Smiling.

He looked directly into the camera.

"Congratulations, Mariana."

"If you're watching this..."

"...you're already too late."

The room erupted in panic.

"Impossible!"

"How did he—"

Santiago laughed softly.

"I replaced your mother's original tape years ago."

"If Father Gabriel brought you here..."

"...then everything happened exactly as I expected."

Mariana's heart nearly stopped.

"This monastery..."

"...was never safe."

Santiago leaned closer to the camera.

"Look behind you."

Every person in the library turned toward the window.

Outside...

Dozens of black SUVs surrounded the monastery.

More than thirty armed men stepped into the rain.

Helicopter blades thundered overhead.

Red laser sights appeared on the library walls.

Father Gabriel whispered only one sentence.

"He found us."

The front doors exploded inward.

Gunfire echoed through the ancient monastery.

As everyone scattered for cover...

A baby's cry suddenly echoed from somewhere upstairs.

Mariana froze.

Every instinct inside her screamed the same impossible thought.

Her son.

He was inside the monastery.
