CHAPTER 1 – THE MAN WHO DIED TWICE

The mountain swallowed the scream.

For one endless second, Adrián Valeriano watched the headlights of his luxury SUV illuminate nothing but empty air.

Then the world disappeared.

Metal twisted.

Glass exploded.

The vehicle rolled down the rocky cliff again...

...and again...

...and again.

Each impact shattered another piece of the life he believed could never be taken from him.

The billionaire who controlled banks, hotels, shipping companies, mining operations, and one of the largest construction empires in Latin America suddenly discovered something money had never been able to buy.

Control.

His head slammed violently against the driver's window.

Blood covered his eyes.

The engine burst into flames.

The seatbelt snapped.

His body was thrown through the shattered windshield before the SUV completed its final roll into the dry riverbed nearly three hundred feet below.

Silence.

The storm continued raging as if nothing had happened.

The most powerful businessman in the country lay motionless among broken rocks.

His heart slowed.

His breathing almost stopped.

And somewhere far away...

Someone smiled.

Three hours earlier...

The celebration inside the Valeriano Tower looked like the gathering of royalty.

Crystal chandeliers reflected thousands of golden lights.

Champagne worth twenty thousand dollars a bottle flowed endlessly.

Government ministers, celebrities, international investors, and television reporters filled the enormous ballroom.

Everyone had come to celebrate Adrián Valeriano's forty-third birthday.

To the public, he was the perfect success story.

The orphan who had built an empire from almost nothing.

The brilliant businessman.

The fearless negotiator.

The billionaire every magazine wanted on its cover.

But nobody noticed the exhaustion hidden behind his expensive smile.

Success had cost him everything.

His parents had died when he was twelve.

His younger sister had disappeared during a kidnapping twenty-four years earlier.

His fiancée had left him after accusing him of loving his companies more than people.

Now his mansion contained fifty rooms...

...yet every night he ate dinner alone.

As another executive praised his latest billion-dollar acquisition, Adrián quietly stepped away from the crowd.

His phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

Normally, he ignored unidentified calls.

Something made him answer.

A frightened female voice whispered only six words.

"They're going to kill you tonight."

The line went dead.

Adrián stared at the screen.

No number.

No caller identification.

Nothing.

Only silence.

Before he could think further, his cousin Felipe approached carrying two glasses of expensive whiskey.

"There you are," Felipe laughed.

"I've been looking everywhere."

Adrián forced a smile.

"You look nervous."

"Nervous?"

Felipe chuckled.

"It's your birthday."

"You should relax."

They clinked glasses.

Adrián had trusted Felipe since childhood.

After all...

They had grown up together.

Played soccer together.

Buried their parents together.

Built the company together.

Or so Adrián believed.

He never noticed the cold satisfaction hiding behind Felipe's smile.

Earlier that afternoon...

Inside a deserted underground parking garage...

Felipe stood beside a black pickup truck.

Across from him waited Sergeant Ignacio Mendoza.

A police officer feared throughout San Marcos Province.

Not because he enforced the law.

Because he sold it.

Mendoza lit a cigarette.

"You understand," he said calmly, "once this starts, there is no turning back."

Felipe handed him a thick envelope.

Inside...

Half a million dollars.

"All I need," Felipe replied, "is for no body to be found."

The officer counted the money without emotion.

"And the mechanic?"

"He already replaced the brake line."

"The accident will look natural."

Mendoza smiled.

"The mountain has claimed many lives."

"One more billionaire won't surprise anyone."

Felipe looked toward the distant city skyline.

By tomorrow morning...

Every television station would announce Adrián Valeriano's tragic death.

Within weeks...

Control of the Valeriano Group would legally pass to him as interim chairman.

Within months...

No one would even question it.

Unless...

A body was recovered.

Back in the mountains...

The first rays of dawn slowly pushed through the storm clouds.

Rosaura tightened the worn shawl around her shoulders before stepping outside her tiny cabin.

The cold bit through her patched boots.

She carried only a wicker basket and an old knife for cutting medicinal roots.

Behind her...

Four-year-old Paquito rubbed his sleepy eyes.

"Mamá..."

"Can I come?"

She smiled.

"You must stay close."

"No wandering."

He nodded seriously.

Ever since his father died inside the San Miguel silver mine, the little boy had tried very hard to become "the man of the house."

Every morning he carried tiny bundles of firewood.

Collected herbs.

Fed their two goats.

Never complained.

Not even when dinner consisted only of soup made from wild vegetables.

They had learned that poverty leaves no room for childhood.

An hour later...

Rosaura suddenly stopped walking.

She smelled smoke.

Burned gasoline.

Something else...

Burned rubber.

She slowly followed the scent until broken trees appeared below the ridge.

Her heartbeat accelerated.

There...

Hidden beneath crushed branches...

Was the destroyed SUV.

It looked less like a vehicle...

...and more like a crushed piece of metal.

No one could have survived.

She whispered a prayer for the unknown victim.

Then...

She saw movement.

Tiny.

Almost impossible.

A hand.

Her breathing stopped.

She climbed carefully toward the wreckage.

The closer she came...

The more unbelievable everything became.

The man's clothes were unlike anything she had ever seen.

His shoes alone probably cost more than her cabin.

A platinum wedding ring...

No.

Not a wedding ring.

A family signet ring engraved with a lion.

A watch covered in diamonds.

Yet none of those things mattered.

His chest moved.

Barely.

She knelt beside him.

The stranger's face was covered in blood.

One eye completely swollen shut.

Several ribs obviously broken.

His left leg bent unnaturally.

Most people would have assumed he was already dead.

But Rosaura placed trembling fingers against his neck.

A pulse.

Weak.

But real.

"Oh, merciful God..."

She looked toward the mountain trail.

The nearest town was nearly four hours away.

Even if she reached help...

He would die long before anyone returned.

Then another terrifying thought crossed her mind.

Sergeant Mendoza.

If the police found this man first...

Would they actually save him?

Or finish what someone else had started?

She remembered how Mendoza had taken money from illegal loggers...

Protected smugglers...

Ignored miners buried alive.

Good people feared him more than criminals did.

Her decision came instantly.

"We're taking him home."

Paquito stared with wide eyes.

"Mamá..."

"He's so heavy."

"I know."

"But if we leave him here..."

"He dies."

The little boy nodded without hesitation.

"What do I do?"

Tears filled Rosaura's eyes.

Sometimes courage comes from the smallest hearts.

She broke sturdy branches from nearby trees.

Removed her own wool shawl.

Built a rough stretcher.

Then the impossible began.

For six exhausting hours...

A widow weighing barely one hundred pounds...

And a four-year-old child...

Dragged an unconscious billionaire up a mountain.

Every few minutes they stopped to catch their breath.

Several times the stretcher slipped.

Once Adrián nearly rolled back into the ravine.

Their hands bled.

Their backs screamed in agony.

Still...

Neither of them gave up.

Because somewhere deep inside...

Rosaura believed every life deserved one person willing to fight for it.

Even a stranger's.

Late that afternoon...

As they finally reached the cabin...

Neither Rosaura nor little Paquito noticed the pair of binoculars watching from the opposite hillside.

Sergeant Mendoza lowered them slowly.

A cruel smile spread across his face.

"So..."

He muttered.

"The billionaire survived."

He pulled out his phone.

A single number was already waiting.

Felipe answered immediately.

"Tell me."

Mendoza looked toward the tiny cabin hidden among the pine trees.

"He isn't dead."

There was complete silence.

Then Felipe spoke with terrifying calm.

"Then burn the cabin."

"And make sure..."

May you like

"...this time no one walks away alive."
