Chapter 5 - Resurrection and Reckoning

The silence that fell over the cemetery was so absolute you could hear the distant rumble of thunder rolling down from the Rocky Mountains.
Penzance-level shock rippled through the ranks of firefighters. Helmets tilted back. Jaws dropped open. Several older veterans crossed themselves, staring at me as if I were a literal specter rising from the crypt.
"Tara...?"
Preston dropped his microphone. It hit the podium with a deafening screech of feedback, rolling across the wooden platform before tumbling into the grass. He stumbled backward, tripping over his own dress boots, crashing hard onto the wet ground. He stared at me with wide, unblinking eyes, his mouth working wordlessly like a fish out of water.
"Surprise, Captain," I said, my voice cutting through the damp air like a razor-sharp blade. I walked steadily down the path, my black heels clicking rhythmically against the stone. "Did you really think a little smoke and a locked door could get rid of me that easily?"
Khloe screamed—a high, panicked sound of pure, unadulterated terror. She scrambled backward, tripping over a floral wreath of white roses, her hands clutching at her skirt as she tried to crawl away.
"She's a ghost! A demon!" Khloe shrieked, pointing a trembling finger at me. "She died! We saw the death certificate! The hospital said her heart stopped!"
"The hospital said whatever Inspector Miller told them to say," I replied, stopping just five feet away from Preston, who was still paralyzed on the ground, staring up at me as if he were looking at the angel of death herself.
I looked down at him, my expression completely devoid of the warmth and affection he had taken for granted for five long years.
"You promised you would never let anything touch me, Preston," I said softly, the words hanging in the cold air like icicles. "And you kept that promise right up until the moment your mistress offered you a way out of my father’s financial audit."
Preston finally found his voice, a ragged, choking whisper. "Tara... I... I didn't know she locked the door. I swear to God, I thought—"
"You thought you were choosing your future," I interrupted, my eyes flashing dangerously. "You thought by letting me burn, you’d inherit my father’s estate and bury the embezzlement files forever. But here’s the funny thing about truth, Preston: it doesn't burn."
At that exact moment, the heavy oak gates of the cemetery swung wide open.
A convoy of unmarked federal vehicles and state police cruisers roared down the paved drive, sirens flashing silently in the gloomy morning light. Federal agents in tactical gear poured out of the vans, moving with swift, practiced precision.
Inspector Miller stepped out of the lead vehicle, holding a thick stack of federal arrest warrants.
"Captain Preston Hale, and civilian Khloe Vance," Miller’s amplified voice boomed across the grounds. "You are under arrest for arson, premeditated attempted murder, municipal fraud, and conspiracy. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."
Two federal agents marched straight past Preston, hauling Khloe roughly to her feet as she screamed and thrashed against the zip-ties. Another two agents stood over Preston, grabbing his arms and ripping the gold captain's insignia right off the shoulders of his dress uniform.
As they dragged him away past my muddy boots, Preston reached out with one desperate, trembling hand, his eyes pooling with agonizing regret.
"Tara... please... please listen to me..."

I stepped aside, letting him pass without a single word.
The ghost of Tara Bennett was gone. What remained was a survivor who was about to take back every single thing they had tried to burn to the ground.
