Chapter 6 - The Confession Room

The interrogation room at the Denver Federal Bureau of Investigation field office smelled like stale coffee, bleach, and cold fear.

The metal table between us was bolted securely to the floor. Across from me sat Khloe Vance, her immaculate appearance completely ruined. Her designer cashmere sweater was stained with mud from the cemetery, her hair was a tangled mess of bird's nests and wet strands, and her eyes were bloodshot from hours of hysterical weeping.

She wasn't looking at me. She was staring fixedly at the mirrored glass wall on the far side of the room, where federal prosecutors and investigators were watching every move.

"You can't keep me here," Khloe muttered, her voice raspy and cracked. "My father’s lawyers... they’ll tear this case apart. The death certificate was filed legally! You're legally dead, Tara! A dead person can't testify in a federal court!"

I leaned forward, resting my elbows on the metal table. I slowly slid a certified copy of the state supreme court’s emergency identity reinstatement order across the table, tapping it with my manicured fingernail.

"My legal status was updated this morning, Khloe," I said calmly. "Turns out, identity theft and state fraud make judges move very, very fast when there's an active federal audit attached."

Khloe flinched, her eyes darting down to the legal document.

"You ruined everything," she spat, her facade of fragile innocence finally cracking entirely, revealing the venomous, desperate woman underneath. "You and your dead father! You couldn't just let us have the department contracts, could you? You had to dig through his old files, sniffing around like a bloodhound!"

"My father was an honest man," I replied steadily. "Unlike yours, who is currently facing twenty counts of wire fraud and grand larceny."

"Preston didn't even want to do it!" Khloe suddenly blurted out, a manic, defensive edge creeping into her voice. "It was my idea! I told him, if you died in that fire, the financial records in your bridal box would burn with you! I told him we could start over with clean money, clear titles, and a fresh start! He hesitated, Tara! He stood outside that door for ten whole seconds before he walked away!"

I felt a cold shiver run down my spine, not from fear, but from the sheer vindication of hearing her say it out loud.

"I know," I whispered. "And that ten-second hesitation is going to keep him in a maximum-security federal penitentiary for the next thirty years."

Just then, the heavy steel door of the interrogation room clicked open. An FBI special agent stepped inside, dropping a thick audio cassette recorder onto the table between us.

"We just finished downloading the body-cam footage from the rookie, Wyatt, who pulled Mrs. Bennett from the burning estate," the agent announced, looking directly at Khloe. "Specifically, the audio feed from Captain Hale's command radio that was left open while he made his decision in the hallway."

Khloe’s breath hitched.

The agent pressed play.

The harsh, static-laced audio filled the small room. We heard the roar of the flames, the scream of the alarms, and then Preston’s distinct, heavy breathing over the mic.

“Captain, the bride is still inside!” Wyatt’s voice shouted.

And then came Preston’s voice, clear as day, picked up by the high-sensitivity receiver clipped to his collar:

“Let her burn. If the fire takes the box, our problems go away with her. Get Khloe out.”

The audio looped back to the beginning of the static hiss.

Khloe stared at the recorder, her jaw slack, every shred of defense evaporating into thin air.

I stood up slowly, smoothing down the front of my black blazer, and looked down at my former friend one last time.

"Enjoy your new home, Khloe," I said quietly. "Tell Preston I said hello."
