Chapter 4 - The Trap at Pier 42The rain returned with vengeance, washing over Pier 42 in heavy, freezing sheets. Fog rolled in off the Hudson River, swallowing the rusted shipping containers in a ghostly white haze.

Alessandro stepped out of his car, wearing only a dark coat and carrying a leather briefcase containing the signed transfer documents for the shipping terminals. His hand rested firmly on the grip of his gun tucked into his waistband.

"I'm here!" Alessandro’s voice boomed across the deserted dock, fighting against the roar of the wind. "Show yourself!"

From behind a towering stack of red cargo containers, three heavy footfalls sounded. Out stepped four men armed with automatic rifles. Leading them was a man Alessandro knew all too well: Dominic 'The Butcher' Vane, a ruthless rival boss who had been exiled from the city five years ago.

"Alessandro," Dominic sneered, his face scarred from a past fire. "You look tired. Grief really takes the edge off a king."

"Where is Annie?" Alessandro demanded, stepping forward.

Dominic raised a hand, and two of his men dragged a tiny figure out from behind a crate. It was Annie. Her hands were bound with zip-ties, and tape was slapped across her mouth, but her eyes—large, fierce, and defiant—met Alessandro’s without a tear.

"Release her, and the shipping terminals are yours," Alessandro said, holding up the briefcase.

Dominic laughed—a dry, horrible sound. "You think this was about money? About terminals? You really don't see the big picture, do you, Moretti?"

"What are you talking about?"

"Who do you think hired me to blow up your wife's boat four years ago?" Dominic grinned, revealing yellowed teeth. "It wasn't a hit to kill her. It was a kidnapping. Sophia was kept alive in a private facility in upstate New York for a year. She gave birth to that child... and then, when she was no longer useful, she was discarded. But the order didn't come from me. It came from inside your own house."

Alessandro’s heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird. "Julian..."

"Julian wanted the empire, but your father’s will stated that the empire could only pass to a legitimate blood heir of the main line," Dominic explained, taking the briefcase from Alessandro's hand. "If you died without an heir, Julian got everything. But if you had a child... Julian was ruined. So, he had your wife taken, harvested an heir to hold as collateral, and planned to eliminate you both when the time was right!"

"Daddy!"

The tape had slipped off Annie’s mouth as she struggled. The word pierced through the roar of the storm.

Daddy.

Alessandro didn't hesitate. In one fluid, terrifying motion, he drew his gun and fired three rounds. The two men holding Annie dropped instantly.

Dominic screamed, reaching for his weapon, but Alessandro lunged forward, slamming his heavy fist into Dominic’s jaw. The rival boss crashed against the wet pavement. Alessandro pinned him down, jamming the barrel of his gun into Dominic’s eye socket.

"Where is the facility where you kept Sophia?!" Alessandro roared.

"It’s... it’s too late!" Dominic choked out, coughing blood. "Julian knows you're here! He’s clearing out the evidence right now! If you go there, you’ll only find bodies!"

Alessandro whipped the butt of the gun across Dominic’s temple, knocking him unconscious. He spun around, grabbed Annie into his arms, and ripped the zip-ties from her wrists.

"Are you okay, little one?" he asked, his voice trembling with an emotion he hadn't felt in years.

May you like

Annie wrapped her small arms tightly around his neck, burying her face in his shoulder. "I knew you’d come, Daddy. Grandma told me you were strong."

Alessandro carried her back to the car, his mind blazing with a lethal clarity. The snake wasn't just Julian. The conspiracy went deeper than he could have ever imagined.
