Chapter 19 - THE UNBROKEN CIRCLELena walked over from the counter, carrying a heavy ceramic mug filled to the brim with dark, steaming black coffee.

She set it gently down in front of him, the steam curling upward between them like a quiet blessing. Then, instead of walking away, she slipped into the opposite bench, sliding her knees against his under the table, resting her hands right beside his calloused knuckles.

“Did you find what you were looking for in New York?” she asked softly, her eyes searching his face for any lingering shadow of the Black Lion.

Matteo looked down at her hands—steady, warm, and completely safe.

“I found out that empires are entirely overrated,” Matteo replied, his voice low and sincere. “They require too many walls, and they never keep out the cold.”

Lena smiled, her thumb lightly tracing the silver wedding band on his finger. “And what keeps out the cold?”

“A very specific diner in upstate New York,” Matteo answered, picking up his coffee mug and taking a slow, appreciative sip. “And a woman who pours coffee at eight o'clock every single night.”

The world outside was loud, complicated, and full of restless shadows. But inside The Last Light Diner, the world was small, bright, and perfectly still.
