Chapter 8 - THE WARMTH OF FOREVERFive years later.

The heavy oak front doors of Whitmore Mansion stood wide open, welcoming the cool autumn breeze off Lake Michigan.

The estate had transformed completely. The cavernous, intimidating halls were now filled with the joyful chaos of family life. In the grand foyer, a massive framed family portrait hung proudly where Arthur’s corporate awards used to be: showing me standing tall with the help of modern rehabilitation braces, holding my five-year-old daughter Maya on my shoulders, while Grace stood beside me holding our younger son Leo, both of us laughing genuinely at the camera.

Outside on the sprawling lawn, Noah—now seven years old and fiercely protective of his younger siblings—was kicking a soccer ball across the grass with me while Grace watched from the patio, sipping her morning coffee wrapped in a thick wool blanket.

I walked over to her, my legs steady beneath me as the physical therapy I had finally committed to after meeting Grace had slowly restored my mobility.

I leaned down, pressing a soft kiss to the top of her head.

"What are you thinking about, my love?" I asked, wrapping my arms around her waist from behind.

Grace smiled, leaning back against my chest and placing her hand over mine.

"I was just thinking about the morning I woke up beside your bed," she whispered softly. "And how glad I am that the previous housekeeper only lasted nine days."

I smiled, resting my chin on her shoulder as we watched our children play in the golden autumn sunlight. The walls I had built around my heart twenty years ago were gone, replaced by something far stronger: a love that could weather any winter.
