Chapter 3 - THE SAFEURE IN THE SHADOWS

“In my world, trust is a currency that buys you a bullet in the back. But with you, Donatella, I’m willing to risk bankruptcy.”The safehouse was a luxurious, high-security penthouse apartment overlooking the mist-shrouded East River. It was a fortress of steel, bulletproof glass, and state-of-the-art surveillance.

By the time they arrived, Cosimo was running a high fever. The exertion of the fight had torn three of Donatella’s meticulous stitches, and he collapsed heavily onto a massive leather sofa, his breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps.

Donatella didn't waste a second. She stripped off her wet sweater, revealing the full, lush curves of her body beneath a tight black tank top. She didn't care how he looked at her; she had a job to do. She aggressively ripped open his shirt, exposing the bloody mess of his torso.

“You’re an idiot,” she muttered, setting up her medical supplies on a marble coffee table. “I told you no fighting.”

“I had a sudden change of schedule,” Cosimo rasped, his eyes burning with fever as he looked up at her. Even in his weakened state, the raw, magnetic power of the man was overwhelming. “Fix me, Donatella. I have a city to burn tomorrow.”

“Hold your breath,” she ordered.

She poured raw alcohol directly onto the open wound. Cosimo’s entire body went rigid as iron. The muscles in his chest and arms corded, his veins bulging against his tan skin as he choked back a roar of agony. His massive hand flew out, gripping Donatella’s thigh to anchor himself. His grip was fiercely tight, pressing deep into her soft flesh.

Donatella froze for a fraction of a second, feeling the intense, electric heat of his palm through her trousers. She looked down into his dark eyes, which were wild, bloodshot, and intensely focused entirely on her.

“Let go of my leg,” she said softly.

“No,” he grunted through clenched teeth. “It’s the only thing keeping me grounded right now.”

Instead of arguing, she applied the needle, rapidly restitching the torn muscle with practiced, ruthless efficiency. She worked in silence for ten minutes, ignoring the intense heat of his hand on her thigh, until the wound was completely bound and secured once more.

When she finished, she stood back, washing her hands in a bowl of warm water. Cosimo relaxed against the cushions, his breathing finally stabilizing as the fever began to recede under the influence of the heavy antibiotics she had forced down his throat.

“Open the book,” he murmured, watching her dry her hands.

Donatella sat in an armchair opposite him, pulling the blood-stained canvas bag onto her lap. She carefully removed her father’s ledger. The pages were yellowed, filled with neat, meticulous columns of numbers, names, and symbols. To an outsider, it looked like a standard clothing inventory.

“It’s a cipher,” Donatella said, her eyes tracking the rows of text. “My father didn't write in code. He wrote in tailoring patterns. Look here. 'Three yards of silk, double-breasted, gold buttons.' The silk refers to the shipping docks. The double-breasted means a two-way bribe. The gold buttons...” She paused, her blood running cold. “...the gold buttons are the names of judges on the federal bench.”

Cosimo leaned forward, his eyes narrowing. “Can you crack it?”

“I am the only one who can,” she said, looking up at him with sudden defiance. “Because the key isn't written anywhere. The key is the measurement system he taught me when I was seven years old. But I’m not translating a single word until you tell me the truth, Cosimo. Who killed him?”

Cosimo looked at her for a long, heavy moment. The mask of the ruthless mafia boss slipped away, revealing something older, darker, and deeply scarred.

“Marco Moretti,” Cosimo said flatly. “The current Don of the Moretti family. He didn't just order the hit on your father, Donatella. He’s the one who betrayed my father twenty years ago, leaving him to rot in a federal penitentiary. I’ve spent my entire life building an empire just to tear his down. We have the same enemy.”

Donatella stared at him, realizing the terrifying depth of the web they were caught in. They weren't just a mafia boss and a seamstress. They were two orphans of the same brutal war, brought together by blood, fabric, and vengeance.

Before she could speak, the penthouse's security monitors suddenly flickered. The digital feed from the private elevator down below showed a terrifying sight.

A man in a pristine white suit was standing in the elevator, calmly checking his watch. It was Marco Moretti himself, accompanied by an army of heavily armed soldiers.

And he wasn't breaking in. He had a security keycard.
