Mara nodded slowly. She felt no sharp burst of grief, nor any surge of triumph. Only a deep, profound, absolute peace.
She reached down, her thumb gently tracing the smooth, delicate curve of little Eleanor’s cheek.
The child opened her eyes, looking up at her mother with a clear, fearless stare—a stare that carried none of the darkness, none of the greed, and none of the tragedy of the bloodline that had come before her.
Mara smiled—a genuine, warm, beautiful smile that reached all the way to her eyes.
