Chapter 2 - The Vault Behind the Walnut DoorThey reached the front door, stepped out into the crisp night air, and hurried toward Valerie’s SUV parked in the circular driveway.

As Valerie unlocked the doors, she glanced back at the lighted windows of the house.
She knew Michael wouldn't let them just drive away to an emergency room without verifying her story—or worse, intercepting her before she could talk to an independent doctor. If she went to a standard hospital, Michael’s influence over the local clinic boards might buy him enough time to alter blood tests or control her medical chart.
She needed proof. Hard, undeniable proof.
And it was sitting twenty feet away, locked inside Michael’s private office.
“Ethan,” Valerie said softly, pausing with her hand on the car door handle.
“Mom? Aren’t we going?”
“Listen to me very carefully. We aren't going to the hospital yet. We’re going back inside, but not through the front.”
Ethan’s eyes widened. “Through the back?”
“Through the garden French doors. They lead straight to Michael’s office hallway.” Valerie looked down at her son. “You told me there were papers on his desk with times written on them. If we can get those papers, we have everything we need to put him away.”
Ethan swallowed hard, terror warring with determination in his young face. Then he nodded. “Show me what to do.”
Three minutes later, they slipped through the side garden gate, keeping low beneath the shadow of the manicured hedges. The French doors leading to the study were unlocked—Michael had always been arrogant enough to believe no one would ever dare trespass in his sanctuary.
The heavy walnut door to Michael’s office was cracked open just an inch.
A thin strip of light spilled across the Persian rug.
Valerie crept forward, gently pushing the door open. The office smelled of expensive leather, cedar, and old paper. On the gleaming mahogany desk sat Michael’s laptop, a leather-bound journal, and a yellow legal pad.
Valerie rushed to the desk, her eyes scanning the legal pad.
There were dates, dosages, and specific times written in Michael’s sharp, precise handwriting.
10/14 - Administered 5ml. Recovery: 4 hours. 11/02 - Administered 8ml. Recovery: 6 hours. Current target: Progressive escalation prior to policy maturation date.
Valerie’s breath caught in her throat. Policy maturation date. The life insurance payout.
She whipped out her phone and began snapping frantic, high-resolution photographs of every page on the desk.
“Mom! Someone’s coming!” Ethan whispered sharply from the doorway, his voice trembling with panic.
Heavy footsteps echoed down the front hallway.

“Valerie? Ethan?” Michael’s voice called out, cold and sharp as broken glass. “Where did you park the car?”
Valerie grabbed Ethan’s hand, swept the yellow legal pad off the desk to take with them, and sprinted toward the French doors just as the office door swung wide open.
