Chapter 6 - THE BOARDROOM AMBUSHOn the 80th floor, the tension in the executive boardroom was thick enough to cut with a diamond-tipped saw.

One hundred of the most powerful board members, investors, and stakeholders sat in velvet-upholstered chairs beneath a massive crystal chandelier. At the front of the room, standing behind a gleaming mahogany podium bearing the gold Harrington crest, was Victoria.
She was speaking into the microphone, her voice smooth, poised, and dripping with manufactured sorrow.
"...and so, it is with a heavy heart, but an unwavering commitment to the integrity of this institution, that I ask the board to ratify the emergency asset freeze and transition all executive voting rights to my interim office," Victoria said, pausing for theatrical effect. She swept her gaze across the room. "We must protect what my husband and I built together... even if it means protecting it from him."
A murmur of agreement rippled through the front rows. Several board members began nodding, reaching for their voting pads to sign the motion.
Julian Vance stood near the side exit, checking his watch anxiously. Why hasn't security confirmed his capture? he thought, his stomach churning with unease.
Suddenly, the heavy double doors at the back of the boardroom didn't just open—they blew inward with a deafening crash, slamming against the wood-paneled walls.
Every head in the room whipped around.
Standing in the doorway, breathing slightly heavily, his suit jacket slightly dust-stained from the lobby scuffle, was Nathan.
The room gasped in unison. Several female board members shrieked. Julian instinctively reached into his jacket for a burner phone, his face draining of all color.
Victoria stopped mid-sentence. Her grip on the edges of the mahogany podium tightened so hard her knuckles turned stark white. Her breath hitched, but she forced her expression into one of absolute, icy disbelief.
"Nathan..." Victoria breathed into the microphone, projecting an image of a terrified wife confronting a volatile madman. "How... how did you get out? Security was told—"
"Security is currently taking a nap downstairs, Victoria," Nathan interrupted, his voice echoing cleanly off the high ceilings as he walked slowly down the central aisle.
The sea of board members parted before him like water, too terrified and stunned to move.
"Guards!" Victoria shrieked, her composed facade cracking at the edges as Nathan marched closer. "Someone call building security! He’s unhinged! He’s violating the restraining order!"
"No one is coming, Victoria," Nathan said, stopping ten feet away from the podium. He reached into his inner suit pocket, pulled out a sleek, heavy-duty encrypted flash drive, and held it up for the entire room to see.
"What is that? A weapon?" Victoria sneered, trying to rally the room. "Look at him, ladies and gentlemen! He’s completely unstable! He’s threatening me in front of the entire board! Security, get him out of here!"
"It’s not a weapon, Victoria," Nathan said softly, his eyes locking onto hers with a predator's focus. "It’s a mirror."
Nathan walked right up the steps of the podium, ignoring Victoria’s frantic gestures for him to stay back. He bypassed her, plugged the flash drive directly into the podium’s master media console, and tapped the touch screen twice.
Instantly, the massive two-story projection screen behind the podium flickered to life.
The live financial feed of the board meeting vanished, replaced by a high-definition, time-stamped video file.
It showed Victoria sitting at her private desk in this very office, speaking quietly into her satellite phone three nights ago.
“Transfer the remaining forty million from the primary foundation account into V-Sterling Holdings in the Caymans,” the audio recording played clearly through the state-of-the-art surround sound system. “And make sure the wire signature traces directly back to Nathan’s secure London terminal. When he lands, he’s finished.”
The boardroom erupted into absolute, deafening chaos.
Shouts of shock, outrage, and disbelief echoed off the walls. Board members stood up from their seats, pointing at the screen, then at Victoria.
Victoria stood frozen at the podium, the color entirely drained from her face. Her perfect makeup couldn't hide the absolute terror twisting her features. She looked like a ghost.
"That... that’s a deepfake!" Victoria screamed, her voice cracking into a high-pitched shriek. "He manufactured it! He’s framing me! Don't listen to him—"
"That's not all, Victoria," Nathan said calmly, tapping the screen again.
A second file popped up: medical records, shell corporation bank registries under the name Victoria Sterling, and—most damning of all—a high-resolution audio recording of Victoria screaming at the three children in the basement, threatening them with the leather whip just hours before Nathan returned home.
The entire room fell into a stunned, horrified silence.
Julian Vance bolted toward the side door, desperate to escape, but two federal agents in plainclothes—who had quietly slipped into the back of the room behind Nathan—stepped out and blocked his exit, clicking heavy steel cuffs around his wrists.

Nathan turned to face his wife, stepping right up to her until they were nose-to-nose.
"You wanted my empire, Victoria," Nathan whispered, his voice cold enough to freeze blood. "Now you can enjoy the view from the other side of the cell bars."
