Chapter 6 - A SISTER'S RECKONINGI held the captured rifle locked on Gordon’s chest, my boots planted firmly in the mud. Ten yards away, my father stood on the edge of the slippery cliff oversight, holding my terrified sister in front of him like a human shield.
"Put the gun down, Dad," I said, my voice ice-cold. "It’s over. OSI and NCIS have surrounded the entire sector. You aren't leaving this beach."
"I built an empire!" Gordon screamed, his voice cracking with madness. "I gave thirty years of my life to the defense industry! And you... you ruined it all with your pathetic little moral crusade!"
"You built an empire on rotten steel!" Madison sobbed, trying to pull away from his grip. "You used cheap cables that hurt soldiers! You let Mom die! You used me!"
"Shut up, you brainless little brat!" Gordon roared, shoving the barrel of the gun harder against Madison’s temple. "You were supposed to marry Hale! You were supposed to give this family naval clearance through his family's connections! You failed me!"
Madison looked at me through the rain, her eyes wide with a realization that changed her forever. The spoiled girl who had spent her whole life trying to win this man’s love finally saw him for what he truly was: a monster.
"Avery..." Madison whispered, her voice surprisingly steady. "Shoot him."
"What?" Gordon gasped.
"Shoot through me if you have to," Madison said, looking straight into my eyes. "Don't let him walk away from what he did to Mom. Don't let him win."
Gordon’s hand trembled in shock. He hadn't expected his favorite pawn to turn into a soldier. In that fraction of a second when Gordon’s focus wavered, Madison threw her elbow backward into his ribs with everything she had!
Gordon stumbled backward, losing his footing on the muddy slick edge of the cliff! The revolver fired wildly into the sky!

"MADISON!" I screamed, sprinting forward.
Gordon grabbed Madison’s coat collar as he fell, dragging her down over the edge of the thirty-foot drop into the raging ocean rocks below!
