Chapter 9 - INTO THE DEEPThe interrogation room at the Washington Navy Yard was sterile and quiet.

Through the two-way glass, Gordon Bennett sat handcuffed to a steel table, flanked by federal prosecutors. Outside the room stood Admiral Richard Hale—Ethan’s uncle’s superior officer and the Commander of Naval Special Warfare.
I sat across from Admiral Hale, a man covered in medals, holding a thick Manila folder stamped: RESTRICTED - JOINT CHIEFS OF STAFF.
"Major Bennett," Admiral Hale said softly, his voice full of solemn weight. "What Gordon Bennett said on that beach was partially true. He is not your biological father."
I sat perfectly still, my hands resting on the table. "Go on, Admiral."
"In 1984, your mother was married to Captain Arthur Vance—a legendary Air Force Combat Rescue pioneer," Admiral Hale revealed, opening the folder. "Captain Vance led a classified mission into Soviet-adjacent territory to retrieve a downed SR-71 pilot. His co-pilot on that mission... was Gordon Bennett."
My heart pounded against my ribs. "Gordon was his co-pilot?"
"Gordon panicked under heavy anti-aircraft fire," Admiral Hale continued. "He ejected early, abandoning Captain Vance. Vance managed to bring the aircraft down and save the pilot, but he lost his life in the process. Gordon returned home, framed Vance for the navigational error to save his own career, and received a corporate pension."
The Admiral looked down at the old black-and-white photograph in the file. It showed a tall Air Force officer with my exact eyes, standing beside a rescue helicopter.
"Gordon married your mother a year later," Admiral Hale explained. "He raised you under his name, but he hated you every single day because every time he looked at your face, he saw the honorable man he had betrayed. When you joined the Air Force Combat Rescue unit—the exact same branch as your real father—Gordon was terrified you would discover the truth."

Tears welled in my eyes, but I kept my head high. "And my scar?"
"The night of Operation Harbor Lantern," Admiral Hale said, "the defective winch cable was sold by Gordon's company. But you... without knowing it... saved six men using the exact same manual cable technique your real father used thirty years earlier in Eastern Europe. Honor is in your blood, Major. No amount of Gordon's lies could ever erase that."
