Chapter 6 - The Ultimate Plot Twist

Viral Headline: THE FINAL TWIST: The Genius Trap That Sent My Husband and Best Friend to Federal PrisonGrant frowned, a sudden seed of doubt planting itself in his eyes. "What are you talking about?"

"Clara," I said, turning my gaze to the notary. "Why don't you tell him what you actually uploaded to the county database five minutes ago?"

Clara Thomas looked up, her face pale and sweating. "I'm sorry, Grant," she whispered. "I had no choice. They had everything."

Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the dining room swung open.

Two men in dark suits stepped into the room, followed by Julian Vance. One of the men held an active federal warrant.

"Federal Bureau of Investigation," the lead agent announced. "Grant Stephens, Sarah Jenkins, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit wire fraud, identity theft, and elder abuse."

Grant scrambled out of his chair, his face turning an ugly shade of purple. "This is absurd! This is a civil dispute! My wife is unstable!"

"Actually, Mr. Stephens," Julian said, stepping forward with his tablet. "Your wife is the one who just saved the federal government a lot of time. Last night, when Emily took your secure flash drive, she didn't just find the keys to the Cayman account. She found the entire digital trail of your money laundering operation. You see, the resort conglomerate buying the lake parcels was a front. It was a shell company funded by a known European cartel looking to launder twenty-two million dollars of illicit funds through Wisconsin real estate."

Grant froze, the color completely draining from his face.

"And because you registered Northern Horizon Holdings under Sarah's name and your Chicago partner," I added, standing up to face him, "you are the primary targets of a federal money laundering sting. Julian has been working with the FBI's financial crimes division for the last six months. They were just waiting for you to execute the final transfer of the land so they could catch you in the act of converting the assets."

"No..." Sarah shrieked, jumping up, pointing a trembling finger at Grant. "He made me do it! It was his idea! He told me we would take the money and run to Europe! He said Emily was stupid and wouldn't notice!"

"You quiet, you bitch!" Grant screamed, turning on her. "You're the one who forged the credit card applications!"

"I have it all on tape," Julian said, holding up a recording device. "Both of your confessions, right here."

The federal agents stepped forward, ruthlessly pinning Grant's arms behind his back and clicking the steel handcuffs around his wrists. Sarah sobbed hysterically as she was led away in cuffs, her silk blouse staining with sweat.

As Grant was dragged toward the front door, he stopped, staring at me with a mixture of hatred and utter disbelief.

"You ruined me," he hissed. "Twelve years, Emily. I gave you everything."

"You gave me a front-row seat to your destruction, Grant," I said, my voice cold and calm. "And by the way... the document you had Richard sign wasn't an amendment to my power of attorney."

I looked at Clara, who gave a weak nod.

"With Julian's help," I continued, "we switched the paperwork before you entered the cabin last night. What Richard actually signed was a full revocation of your access to any joint marital assets, and a post-nuptial agreement transferring one hundred percent of your personal assets to me in the event of your arrest for criminal activity."

Grant stared at me, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. He had not only lost the twenty-two million—he had lost his own savings, his cars, his house, and his freedom.

"Goodbye, Grant," I said.

The door slammed shut behind them, leaving the house in a beautiful, quiet silence.

Richard looked up at me, a genuine, warm smile spreading across his face. The fog in his eyes was completely gone. "You did good, Emily. Your mother would be so proud."

I walked over to him, wrapping my arms around his shoulders, breathing in the scent of cedar and home.

The battle was over. The land was safe. And for the first time in twelve years, I was finally free.
