Chapter 5 - The Web of Deceit

"You bastard," Marcus breathed, his body shaking with a volatile mix of grief and rage. "You killed her. You staged the crash."
"She wouldn't stop, Marcus!" Thomas shouted, his voice cracking with a strange, defensive desperation. "She was going to ruin everything! The city, the economy, the people who actually run this state. She thought she was being a hero, but she was just being reckless. I tried to warn her. I gave her three chances to drop the story!"
"She was uncovering a human trafficking ring, Thomas! They were stealing children!" Marcus yelled, stepping forward, ignoring the gun pointed at his chest.
"It was an adoption brokerage!" Thomas countered, his eyes wild. "High-profile clients, wealthy families who couldn't have children getting them from unfit mothers. We were cleaning up the streets and funding the department's undercover operations at the same time!"
"You're a monster," Marcus said.
"Maybe," Thomas whispered, his finger tightening on the trigger. "But a monster who looked after you for four years. Who kept the Magistrate from cleaning up the loose ends—meaning you and that boy. But now you've forced my hand. Hand over the drive, Marcus."
"No," a cold voice echoed from the hallway.
Before Thomas could turn, Clara stepped out of the shadows, her gun raised. But she didn't fire at Thomas.
Instead, she walked into the room and pointed her weapon directly at Marcus.
Marcus froze, caught between the Chief of Police and the woman he had just saved from the diner. "Clara? What are you doing?"
Clara’s face was completely blank, devoid of the emotion she had shown at the diner or in the car. "I’m sorry, Marcus. But you were just the bloodhound. I needed you to find the drive. The Magistrate doesn't want it destroyed. I want it."
Thomas Vance laughed, a bitter, barking sound. "Clara. I should have known the Magistrate’s top fixer would try to flip the script. You’re planning on blackmailing the boss with that data, aren't you?"
"With this drive, I control the entire state's political infrastructure," Clara said calmly, extending her hand toward Marcus. "Hand it over, Marcus. If you do, I let you and the boy walk. I’ll even take care of the Chief for you."
Marcus looked between the two corrupt entities in his son's bedroom. He realized with a sickening clarity that Clara had never been a victim. She had staged the entire scene at the diner. She had sat there, looking lonely, knowing Theo’s empathetic nature would force Marcus to invite her over. She had used his dead wife’s memory as a weapon to guide him straight to the hidden files.
"And what about the note?" Marcus asked, his voice suddenly calm, a dangerous stillness settling over him. "What did Diane mean about Theo’s adoption?"
Clara smiled, a cruel, beautiful curve of her lips. "You really don't know, do you? Marcus... Diane didn't give birth to Theo. She stole him. From one of our holding facilities seven years ago. She couldn't have kids, she found out about the ring, and instead of reporting it immediately, she took a baby for herself. She falsified the birth certificates using her media connections."

Clara’s eyes gleamed with a twisted amusement. "Theo isn't your son, Marcus. He’s the biological child of the Magistrate himself. The son he’s been hunting for seven years."
The Hook: The revelation shattered Marcus’s reality completely. The boy he had raised, the boy whose scrambled eggs he cut every Tuesday, was the son of the monster who had ordered his wife's murder. And at that exact moment, the sound of a child’s scream echoed from the van outside.
