Chapter 8 - Rebuilding the FoundationSix months after the trial, my life had completely transformed. The media storm had quieted down, replaced by professional respect and a growing caseload at Vance & Sterling Forensic Accounting. We were now the premier firm in the Southeast for uncovering corporate white-collar crime and hidden asset recovery.

I spent my Saturdays not cooking lavish, terrified feasts for an abusive husband, but walking through the historic botanical gardens of Atlanta, breathing in the fresh air, unbothered, untethered, and entirely free.
One afternoon, as I was reviewing a complex corporate portfolio in my office, Marcus knocked and walked in, holding a thick legal dossier.
âYou have a new client consultation waiting in Conference Room B,â Marcus said, raising an eyebrow. âAnd trust me, youâre going to want to take this one personally.â
âWho is it?â I asked, not looking up from my spreadsheet.
âSarah Jenkins,â Marcus said, setting the dossier on my desk. âSheâs the chief financial officer of a major real estate conglomerate here in Atlanta. Her husband is the CEO. Heâs been systematically embezzling company funds, hiding assets in offshore accounts, andâaccording to the confidential notes her personal assistant attachedâhe has a history of severe domestic violence.â
My pen stopped moving across the paper.
I slowly raised my head, looking at the photographs attached to the front of the dossier. A beautiful, elegant woman with dark hair and quiet, terrified eyes, standing next to a smug, arrogant man wearing an expensive custom suit.
âDoes she know who I am?â I asked softly.
âShe specifically requested you,â Marcus replied, leaning against the edge of the desk. âWord gets around, Elizabeth. When powerful men think they can hide behind closed doors and locked bank accounts, women look for someone who knows how to open those doors from the inside.â

I closed the spreadsheet, stood up, and buttoned my blazer.
âTell Mrs. Jenkins Iâll be right in,â I said, a faint, knowing smile touching the corners of my lips. âAnd tell her to bring all her financial records, every text message, and every bank statement she can find. Weâre going to need a very big folder.â
