Chapter 7 - The Cipher in the LedgerFor the next two weeks, Tessa’s life transformed into a blur of ancient ink, shipping codes, and midnight surveillance.

She resigned from Bellaforte—much to David’s absolute terror, as he was convinced Matteo would hunt him down for letting her go—and moved into a small, windowless archive room on the third floor of the Moretti building.
The room smelled of old paper and ozone.
Every day, Frank Delaney would drop off a new ledger, standing guard outside the heavy oak door like a sentinel. No one else was allowed inside. Not Luca. Not the corporate accountants.
Only Tessa and the ghosts of the Moretti past.
By the end of the second week, Tessa had discovered something astonishing.
The shipping manifests weren't just logs of cargo—they were a linguistic puzzle. Every third line contained a hidden acrostic, written in flawless fifteenth-century Tuscan Italian, pointing to secret bank accounts hidden in Swiss and Venetian institutions under fictitious names.
More importantly, she found a recurring name.
The Vanguard Syndicate.
A rival organization that had supposedly been wiped out in the late nineties was still active, and their current representatives were sitting on the board of directors of several legitimate corporations currently partnering with Moretti Global.
Late one night, as the clock on the wall clicked past midnight, the heavy oak door swung open.
Matteo walked in, holding two cups of black coffee. He looked tired; the lines around his eyes were deeper than usual. He set a cup down on the desk next to Tessa’s open ledger.
"You're still here," Matteo noted, leaning against the edge of the shelf.
"I found them," Tessa said, not looking up from the page. She pointed a slender finger at a paragraph written in cramped, spidery handwriting. "Your grandfather wasn't just hiding money from tax collectors, Mr. Moretti. He was hiding it from the Vanguard Syndicate. They’re still trying to access these accounts through shell companies in Delaware."
Matteo looked down at the page. His jaw tightened, a muscle ticking in his cheek.
"Vanguard," Matteo murmured, the name tasting like poison on his tongue. "They’re the ones who engineered the takeover of our West Coast ports last month."
"And they have an insider inside your own corporate structure," Tessa added, looking up to meet his eyes. "Someone who knows about these ledgers. Someone who has been feeding them information about your shipping routes."
Matteo slowly raised his gaze to meet hers. The distance between them in the small archive room suddenly felt electric, charged with a dangerous, unspoken tension.

"And who would that be, Miss Bell?" Matteo asked softly.
"Luca Vieri," Tessa said without blinking.
