Chapter 1 - The Anatomy of a Trap

The stainless-steel counters of my kitchen reflected the harsh, overhead halogen lights like a surgical theater. It was fitting. Tonight, an extraction was taking place, and I was the lead surgeon.
Through the heavy oak door, muffled by layers of soundproofing and mahogany, their laughter trickled through. Natalie was telling a story about an intern she had humiliated at her architectural firm, and Dominic was chuckling, his bass tone vibrating softly through the wood. Victoria chimed in with a sharp, cutting remark about someone’s social standing.
They were comfortable. That was their fatal flaw.
For two years, they had played their game. They brought me into their world as Dominic’s blushing, unassuming bride—a sweet little nothing from a modest background whom they could mold, shape, and discard at will. What they never bothered to look up—what Dominic’s high-priced corporate lawyers failed to check before forcing me to sign a predatory prenuptial agreement—was my maiden name.
Or rather, my father’s name.
Arthur Vance.
The man who had built Vance Global Forensics, the premier white-collar crime investigation firm in the country, before passing away and leaving every single share, every patent, and every classified ledger directly to his only daughter.
They thought I was a penniless orphan who needed their charity. In reality, I had spent the last ninety days sitting at this exact kitchen island, quietly unlocking encrypted hard drives, tracing shell corporations, and compiling a master dossier on Dominic’s embezzlement, Victoria’s tax evasion, and Natalie’s corporate espionage.
I turned to the commercial-grade stove. A large pot of water was already coming to a rolling, violent boil. Next to it sat three heavy ceramic bowls.
Tonight, the pasta wasn't just dinner. It was the delivery mechanism.
I reached into my apron pocket and pulled out a sleek, custom-encrypted flash drive encased in brushed titanium. Etched onto its side was a single word: EXPOSED.
I placed it gently beside the cutting board. Then, I picked up a chef's knife, its blade honed to a razor's edge, and began to slice through a row of garlic cloves with rhythmic, calculating precision.
Tick, tack, tick.
Every slice brought me closer to freedom. Every second brought them closer to freefall.
"Hurry up in there, Audrey!" Dominic’s voice boomed, sharp and impatient, cutting through the kitchen door. "We didn't fund your lifestyle so you could dawdle over water!"
May you like
Fund my lifestyle? I smiled to myself, the metallic taste of copper still lingering faintly on my lips where his ring had caught me.
Oh, Dominic, I thought, my eyes narrowing as I tossed the minced garlic into a pan of sizzling olive oil. You haven't funded a damn thing. But you're about to pay the ultimate bill.
