Chapter 1 - The Touch of the Blade

The kitchen’s air was thick with the scent of caramelized sugar and burning fat, but Sadie’s focus was locked entirely on the bruised, bloody knuckles resting on her pristine stainless steel plating pass.

Declan’s fingers were thick and powerful, the hand of a man who broke bones for a living but wrapped them in bespoke Italian wool. The sluggish drop of blood near his thumb was a ticking clock. If that drop hit her clean metal pass, Chef Richard would lose his mind—or worse, Declan’s heavily armed shadow-men would take it as an insult.

Before her brain could process the suicidal stupidity of the act, Sadie reached out and grabbed his wrist.

The kitchen didn't just go quiet; it seemed to lose all atmospheric pressure. Behind her, she heard the sharp, horrified intake of Chef Richard’s breath. A line cook dropped a pair of tongs, the metallic clatter echoing like a gunshot on the quarry tiles.

Declan’s hand froze.

Slowly, his bruised wet slate eyes drifted from the white linen towel he had been reaching for, down to her small, flour-dusted fingers wrapped tightly around his forearm, and then up to her face. His expression didn't change, but his eyes narrowed slightly, analyzing her like a riddle he hadn't expected to solve tonight.

"You don't touch the plating towels," Sadie said, her voice remarkably level despite the violent, erratic hammering of her pulse against her ribs. "They are sterile. And you are bleeding."

One of Declan’s massive bodyguards took a heavy step forward, his hand disappearing beneath his tailored jacket. "Hey, girl. Let go of—"

Declan raised his left hand, a single, lazy gesture that instantly stopped the giant in his tracks.

"Step back, Marcus," Declan murmured, his voice a low, gravelly vibration that seemed to cut right through the hum of the exhaust hoods. He turned his full attention back to Sadie. "You're bold for a girl who handles lettuce for a living."

"It's venison," she corrected, pointing with her plating tweezers to the perfectly arranged plate of carpaccio in front of her. "And if you drip blood on my pass, I have to throw the whole station out. I don't have time to prep another loin before the 9:30 seating."

A faint, dangerous glint of amusement flickered in Declan’s eyes. "A perfectionist."

He didn't pull away. Instead, he turned his wrist within her grip, his thick fingers wrapping around her hand with a slow, terrifying pressure that was not quite painful, but carried the promise of absolute force.

"Tell me, chef," Declan whispered, leaning over the pass so close she could smell the cold rain, the metallic tang of gunpowder, and the expensive vetiver on his collar. "What do you do when a man who can buy this entire street tells you he wants a clean towel?"

"I give him a clean towel," Sadie said, her gaze holding his without flinching. "But I don't let him ruin my kitchen to get it."
