CHAPTER 4 — The Woman Erased From History

Victor Langley's face turned white.

Not pale.

White.

Marco had known Victor for over twenty years.

He had seen him negotiate billion-dollar acquisitions without blinking.

He had watched him testify before government investigators with complete composure.

He had buried Marco's father.

He had stood beside Elena's grave.

Victor Langley never looked afraid.

Until now.

Marco slowly walked toward the enormous black-and-white photograph hanging behind the reception desk.

It had been there for decades.

Every employee passed beneath it every morning.

Every guest admired it without giving it much thought.

The bronze plaque underneath read:

THE GRAND OPENING OF THE ALDINE HOTEL
May 17, 1971

In the center stood Samuel Reyes.

Young.

Proud.

Smiling beside the hotel's front doors.

Dozens of construction workers surrounded him.

The city's mayor shook his hand.

Local reporters held cameras.

It looked like a perfect beginning.

But now Marco noticed something impossible to ignore.

Near Samuel's right side...

Half of a woman's hand remained visible.

Nothing else.

Not her face.

Not her body.

Just four fingers resting gently on Samuel's arm.

Someone hadn't simply cropped the picture.

Someone had surgically erased a person from history.

Marco stepped closer.

His voice was almost a whisper.

"Who was she?"

No answer.

He turned.

Victor still hadn't moved.

The old chairman stared at the photograph as though seeing a ghost.

"Victor."

Silence.

"Answer me."

Victor closed his eyes.

"I hoped..."

"...you would never notice."

Marco frowned.

"You hoped?"

"I was told never to speak about her again."

"By who?"

Victor looked away.

"Your father."

The words hit the room like thunder.

"My father?"

Victor nodded slowly.

"After your grandfather died."

Marco's chest tightened.

"My father erased someone from this photograph?"

"I tried to stop him."

"Why?"

Victor swallowed hard.

"He said the hotel's future depended on forgetting she ever existed."

Claire, still standing behind the reception desk, exchanged confused glances with several employees.

Nobody understood what they were hearing.

Sophia quietly colored beside the fireplace, humming softly to herself.

Completely unaware that a family history was beginning to crack open.

Marco reached toward the photograph.

His fingertips lightly touched the outline where the missing woman had once stood.

"The restoration..."

"When was it done?"

Victor answered immediately.

"Nineteen ninety-eight."

"The year after your grandfather passed away."

Marco's eyes narrowed.

"And no one questioned why someone disappeared?"

Victor gave a bitter smile.

"Everyone who knew the truth was gone within two years."

"Retired."

"Transferred."

"Bought out."

"Or they stayed silent."

Marco slowly turned.

"Take it down."

The maintenance staff hesitated.

Victor nodded.

"You heard him."

Within minutes, two employees carefully removed the heavy framed photograph from the wall.

Dust covered the space behind it.

As they carried it into the executive conference room, guests quietly watched from a distance.

Word had already spread throughout the hotel.

The owner had arrived.

Someone had been fired.

Now an old family secret was emerging.

Inside the conference room...

The photograph rested on a long walnut table.

Marco stared at it silently.

"Can the glass be removed?"

The hotel's restoration specialist was called immediately.

An elderly man named Arthur arrived twenty minutes later carrying white gloves and specialized tools.

Arthur had restored paintings and historical photographs for museums across the country.

He studied the frame carefully.

Then frowned.

"This isn't original."

Victor looked surprised.

"What do you mean?"

Arthur pointed toward the edges.

"Someone replaced the original print."

Marco looked up.

"Can you prove it?"

Arthur nodded.

"The paper is too modern."

"The frame is fifty years old."

"The photograph isn't."

Silence.

Someone had replaced history.

Arthur carefully removed the backing.

Several yellowed documents slipped onto the table.

Victor blinked.

"Those weren't there before."

Arthur unfolded the oldest sheet.

It was an invoice.

Dated...

August 12, 1998.

Customer:

Daniel Reyes

Marco's father.

Service Requested:

Historical Photo Restoration and Subject Removal

Every person in the room froze.

Marco read the final line twice.

Remove unidentified female standing beside Samuel Reyes.

His jaw tightened.

"Unidentified?"

Victor whispered,

"She wasn't unidentified."

"You knew her?"

Victor slowly nodded.

"I knew her very well."

Marco looked directly into Victor's eyes.

"Who was she?"

Victor didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he walked toward the conference room window overlooking the city.

For nearly a minute...

No one spoke.

Finally he said quietly,

"Her name was Isabel."

Marco searched his memory.

Nothing.

He had never heard that name.

"Who was Isabel?"

Victor turned back.

"The best employee your grandfather ever hired."

Claire smiled faintly.

"So she worked here?"

Victor looked at her sadly.

"No."

"She built this place."

Everyone stared.

Victor continued.

"When Samuel borrowed money to build The Aldine..."

"The banks laughed."

"They said he'd fail within a year."

"He had almost nothing."

"So did Isabel."

"They worked construction together."

"They carried bricks."

"They painted walls."

"They scrubbed floors."

"They opened this hotel side by side."

Marco's heartbeat quickened.

"If she helped build everything..."

"Why erase her?"

Victor's eyes filled with regret.

"Because people believed she deserved half of everything."

The room fell silent.

Marco whispered,

"Did she?"

Victor answered without hesitation.

"Yes."

Another long silence.

Marco slowly sat down.

"My grandfather never mentioned her."

"He tried."

Victor's voice cracked.

"Many times."

"But every conversation ended the same way."

"Your father would walk away."

Marco stared at the altered photograph.

Something suddenly felt wrong.

Not emotionally.

Physically.

He leaned closer.

The missing figure hadn't simply been removed.

Part of Samuel's arm had also been reconstructed.

Someone had gone to extraordinary lengths to make it appear as though Isabel had never existed.

Arthur noticed it too.

"There's something else."

"What?"

Arthur carefully flipped the photograph over.

Hidden beneath the backing...

Tape secured another piece of paper.

Old.

Folded.

Faded.

Marco carefully unfolded it.

Inside was a handwritten sentence.

Not from Samuel.

Not from Victor.

From Isabel herself.

The ink had almost disappeared.

But one sentence remained perfectly readable.

"If they erase my face, they will never erase the promise Samuel made."

Below the sentence...

A signature.

Isabel Moreno

And beneath her signature...

A number.

File No. 27

Marco frowned.

"File twenty-seven?"

Victor's breathing suddenly became uneven.

"No..."

Marco looked up.

"You know what that is."

Victor slowly sat down.

His hands trembled.

"I prayed that file had been destroyed."

"It wasn't."

"What is it?"

Victor looked at Marco with tears in his eyes.

"It isn't a personnel file."

"It isn't a lawsuit."

"It isn't about money."

Marco stood.

"Then tell me."

Victor whispered the words so quietly that only Marco could hear them.

"It's your grandfather's second will."

Marco froze.

"My... what?"

Victor nodded.

"The will no one was ever supposed to find."

And somewhere deep beneath The Aldine Hotel...

Locked inside a forgotten basement archive...

File No. 27 was still waiting.

Exactly where someone had hidden it...

May you like

Twenty-eight years earlier.
