CHAPTER 5 — The Secret Will Hidden Beneath the Hotel

Marco didn't speak.

For several seconds, he simply stared at Victor.

The words echoed inside his mind.

A second will.

His grandfather had left another will.

And somehow, no one in the Reyes family had ever heard about it.

Outside the conference room, the hotel continued operating as if nothing had happened.

Guests checked in.

Bellmen carried luggage.

A pianist softly played Moon River.

Life moved forward.

Inside the room...

Everything had stopped.

Marco finally broke the silence.

"Start from the beginning."

Victor slowly lowered himself into a chair.

For the first time in thirty years, the old chairman looked every bit of his seventy-two years.

"I've kept this secret since the day your grandfather died."

Marco folded his arms.

"Then today is the day you stop."

Victor nodded.

"You deserve the truth."

Twenty-eight years earlier...

Samuel Reyes lay in a private hospital room on the top floor of St. Mary's Medical Center.

The machines beside his bed beeped steadily.

His breathing had become shallow.

Cancer had taken almost everything.

But not his mind.

Victor stood beside the window.

Daniel Reyes—Marco's father—paced the room impatiently.

Samuel motioned for Victor to come closer.

"Close the door."

Victor obeyed.

Samuel looked at both men.

"There are two envelopes."

Daniel frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"My public will..."

"...and my real one."

The room fell silent.

Samuel looked directly at Victor.

"The second will stays hidden."

Daniel stepped forward.

"Father, that's ridiculous."

Samuel ignored him.

"It remains hidden..."

"...until someone from this family values people more than profit."

Victor remembered every word.

Even now.

Samuel had squeezed his wrist with surprising strength.

"When that day comes..."

"...give them File Twenty-Seven."

Then he closed his eyes.

Those were the last instructions he ever gave.

Back in the present...

Marco remained perfectly still.

"My father knew?"

Victor nodded.

"He heard every word."

"Then why hide it?"

Victor looked down.

"Because your father believed the second will would destroy everything."

Claire listened quietly from the doorway.

Every employee nearby had forgotten they were supposed to be working.

Nobody wanted to miss what happened next.

Marco walked slowly toward the window.

Chicago stretched beneath him.

The same skyline his grandfather had admired when The Aldine first opened.

"My father loved this hotel."

Victor smiled sadly.

"He loved owning it."

"Your grandfather loved building it."

Those two things...

Were never the same.

Marco turned.

"What exactly is File Twenty-Seven?"

Victor hesitated.

"I've never opened it."

Marco frowned.

"You expect me to believe that?"

"It's the truth."

"Why?"

"Because I gave Samuel my word."

Victor reached inside his jacket.

From an inner pocket...

He removed a tiny brass key attached to a faded leather tag.

Stamped into the tag were four numbers.

B-127

Marco took the key.

It felt surprisingly heavy.

"What does this open?"

"The original archive."

"I thought the archives were digitized."

Victor nodded.

"They are."

"The public records are."

"This room isn't."

Arthur looked confused.

"There's another archive?"

Victor smiled faintly.

"Most people working here don't even know it exists."

"When Samuel built the hotel..."

"He created a fireproof basement vault."

"No elevators."

"No electronic locks."

"No cameras."

"Only paper."

Marco looked at the old brass key again.

"And only one key."

Victor nodded.

"Until today."

Just then...

The conference room door burst open.

A young security officer hurried inside, breathing heavily.

"Mr. Reyes..."

Victor frowned.

"What is it?"

The guard swallowed.

"Someone just tried to enter the executive records office."

Marco looked up.

"Who?"

"They ran before we reached them."

"What did they take?"

The guard looked uneasy.

"Nothing."

"They couldn't get inside."

"But..."

"But what?"

"They knew exactly where the archive blueprints were stored."

Silence.

Someone else knew about the hidden vault.

Marco's voice became calm.

"Lock every executive office."

"Yes, sir."

"No employee leaves the building."

"Yes, sir."

"And review every security camera from the last forty-eight hours."

The guard hurried away.

Victor looked worried.

"This isn't random."

Marco agreed.

"No."

"They're looking for the same thing we are."

Sophia quietly walked into the conference room holding her teddy bear.

"Daddy?"

Marco immediately smiled.

"Hi, sweetheart."

"Are we still going to visit Mommy?"

His heart tightened.

"Yes."

"We're just finishing something first."

She looked at the brass key.

"Ooh..."

"Treasure key?"

Several employees smiled despite everything.

Marco laughed softly.

"Maybe."

Sophia grinned.

"Grandpa says treasure is always hidden."

The room became quiet again.

Marco knelt.

"Grandpa?"

She nodded innocently.

"Great-Grandpa Sammy."

"He told me in my dream."

Victor suddenly looked up.

"What?"

Sophia shrugged.

"He said..."

"'Kind hearts always find locked doors.'"

Nobody smiled now.

Victor slowly sat down.

Samuel Reyes used to say that.

Exactly those words.

No one had heard them in nearly thirty years.

Marco had never taught Sophia that sentence.

Neither had Victor.

Yet somehow...

The four-year-old had repeated it perfectly.

That evening...

After placing Elena's twelve roses beneath her memorial plaque in Suite 712, Marco returned to the lobby.

The hotel had grown quiet.

Victor waited beside the private staircase.

"No cameras beyond this point."

Marco nodded.

Claire stepped forward.

"Mr. Reyes..."

He turned.

"I know I don't deserve this..."

"...but may I come?"

Marco studied her for a long moment.

"Why?"

"Because I helped judge someone without knowing them."

She lowered her eyes.

"If your grandfather built this hotel on second chances..."

"...I'd like to earn mine."

Victor smiled.

"Samuel would have liked her."

Marco finally nodded.

"Come with us."

Claire almost cried again.

"Thank you."

Victor unlocked an old iron gate hidden behind a wall of vintage wine racks.

The hinges groaned.

Cold air drifted upward.

Stone steps disappeared into darkness.

Arthur switched on an old lantern.

"There isn't any electricity down there?"

Victor shook his head.

"There never was."

Marco carried Sophia onto his shoulder once more.

She wrapped sleepy arms around his neck.

"Adventure?"

She whispered.

"The biggest one yet."

Together...

Marco...

Victor...

Claire...

Arthur...

And the sleeping little girl...

Began descending into the forgotten basement beneath The Aldine Hotel.

Twenty-three steps later...

They reached a massive steel vault door covered in dust.

Across its surface, engraved in brass, were the words Samuel Reyes had written himself.

"Truth belongs to those willing to open heavy doors."

Marco inserted the brass key.

It fit perfectly.

He slowly turned it.

CLICK.

The ancient locking mechanism echoed through the underground chamber.

The vault door moved only an inch...

Then suddenly stopped.

Something on the other side was blocking it.

Marco pushed harder.

Nothing.

Arthur aimed the lantern through the narrow opening.

His face instantly changed.

"Oh..."

Marco frowned.

"What is it?"

Arthur slowly stepped back.

"There shouldn't be anyone in there..."

Victor's heartbeat quickened.

"What do you see?"

Arthur whispered,

"Fresh footprints."

"In the dust."

Marco's grip tightened on the vault handle.

Someone had entered the sealed archive...

Before them.

And judging by the footprints...

May you like

That person was still inside.
