CHAPTER 2 — "Lock Every Door!" The Security Footage Exposed an Impossible Truth... and Someone in the Restaurant Was Lying

For three long seconds, nobody moved.
The luxurious dining room remained frozen in complete silence.
Crystal glasses hung motionless in trembling hands. A violinist lowered his bow in confusion. Even the kitchen staff stood in the doorway, staring toward the center of the room where a billionaire, his terrified son, his glamorous fiancée, and a trembling waitress faced one another like characters trapped inside a nightmare.
Rodrigo Mendes reacted first.
"Gabriel!"
He lunged across the table, knocking over his wineglass as he snatched the plate away from his son. The porcelain shattered against the marble floor, pasta scattering in every direction.
Gabriel burst into tears.
"I wasn't going to eat it, Dad..."
Rodrigo wrapped one arm around his son while staring at Valentina.
His voice was frighteningly calm.
"What did she mean?"
Valentina didn't flinch.
Instead, she slowly folded her hands together and looked almost... offended.
"I have no idea."
She turned toward Isabela.
"This poor girl is either confused... or someone has paid her to destroy us."
Murmurs immediately spread across the restaurant.
"A setup?"
"Corporate enemies?"
"It wouldn't be the first time someone tried to embarrass Rodrigo Mendes."
Several guests nodded.
Rodrigo had built his fortune by defeating powerful rivals. Many people would have loved to ruin his engagement in front of dozens of influential witnesses.
For a brief moment...
Even Rodrigo's expression became uncertain.
Isabela saw it.
She realized the billionaire wasn't sure whom to believe.
Her heart sank.
Restaurant manager Eduardo Almeida rushed into the dining room.
"What happened?"
Before anyone answered, Valentina spoke.
"This waitress falsely accused me of poisoning a child."
Eduardo's face turned pale.
He knew exactly who Rodrigo Mendes was.
He also knew the scandal could destroy the restaurant overnight.
He looked at Isabela.
"Tell me exactly what you saw."
Every eye focused on her.
Isabela swallowed hard.
"I saw Ms. Valentina remove a white packet from her handbag."
She pointed toward the designer purse still resting beside Valentina's chair.
"She poured white powder onto Gabriel's pasta."
Valentina laughed softly.
Not nervous.
Not frightened.
Almost amused.
"You mean this?"
She calmly reached into her handbag and removed...
A packet of grated Parmesan cheese.
The restaurant erupted with whispers.
She placed it on the table.
"I always carry imported Parmesan because I dislike processed cheese."
Several guests leaned closer.
It looked perfectly ordinary.
Valentina shrugged.
"Would anyone like to inspect it?"
Rodrigo frowned.
Had Isabela mistaken cheese for poison?
The waitress suddenly felt the room slipping away from her.
Had she ruined her own life?
No...
She couldn't have imagined it.
She knew what she'd seen.
She knew.
Gabriel quietly tugged on Rodrigo's sleeve.
"Dad..."
"What is it?"
The little boy hesitated before whispering,
"That isn't the packet."
Rodrigo looked down.
"What do you mean?"
Gabriel pointed toward Valentina.
"She used a different one."
The room fell silent again.
Valentina immediately smiled at Gabriel.
"My sweetheart..."
"You must be confused."
Gabriel looked away instead of answering.
For the first time...
Rodrigo noticed something he had somehow ignored for months.
Every time Valentina spoke directly to Gabriel...
The boy instinctively lowered his eyes.
Not out of respect.
Out of fear.
Rodrigo slowly stood.
His face had become unreadable.
"No one leaves."
The temperature in the room seemed to drop instantly.
He looked toward the manager.
"Lock every entrance."
Eduardo hesitated.
"Mr. Mendes..."
"Now."
Within seconds, security guards secured every exit.
The elegant engagement dinner had officially become an active investigation.
Guests exchanged nervous glances.
Some reached for their phones.
Rodrigo raised his voice.
"No recordings."
Several businessmen quietly put their phones away.
Everyone understood.
Whatever happened next...
Would remain inside these walls.
At least for now.
Rodrigo turned toward Valentina.
"Open your handbag."
She smiled.
"Of course."
Without hesitation, she handed him the expensive leather purse.
Rodrigo emptied everything onto the table.
Lipstick.
Perfume.
Wallet.
Car keys.
Compact mirror.
Phone.
Imported Parmesan packets.
Nothing else.
No mysterious powder.
Nothing suspicious.
Valentina folded her arms.
"I told you."
She looked directly at Isabela.
"Now..."
"I believe you owe me an apology."
The young waitress felt tears burning her eyes.
Had she truly been mistaken?
No.
No.
She remembered every movement.
Every second.
Every detail.
Someone had removed the packet.
But when?
Rodrigo wasn't satisfied.
He looked toward the restaurant manager.
"I want every security camera."
Eduardo nodded immediately.
"Our surveillance room is upstairs."
Rodrigo turned toward two bodyguards.
"No one enters."
"No one leaves."
Then he looked at Isabela.
"You're coming with me."
Valentina's smile finally faded.
Only slightly.
Only for a second.
But Isabela noticed.
And that tiny crack in her confidence gave the waitress hope.
Five minutes later...
Inside the surveillance room...
Four large monitors displayed every angle of the restaurant.
The head of security rewound the footage.
Everyone leaned closer.
"There."
Isabela pointed.
"That's when she reached into her bag."
The video slowed.
Valentina opened her handbag.
She removed...
A white packet.
Exactly as Isabela remembered.
The footage continued.
She poured something over Gabriel's pasta.
Then stirred it carefully.
Rodrigo's jaw tightened.
"Zoom."
The technician enlarged the image.
The packet was too blurry to identify.
"Enhance it."
The technician shook his head.
"The camera resolution isn't high enough."
Rodrigo slammed his fist onto the desk.
"Damn it."
Then...
The security guard frowned.
"Sir..."
"Look at Camera Six."
Everyone turned.
It showed the dining room from another angle.
This time...
Something unbelievable appeared.
Just three seconds before Isabela shouted...
A man dressed as a restaurant waiter quietly walked behind Valentina.
He brushed lightly against her chair.
Less than one second.
Then he disappeared toward the kitchen.
Rodrigo frowned.
"I don't remember him."
The manager's face suddenly turned ghostly white.
He leaned closer to the monitor.
His lips trembled.
"That's impossible..."
Rodrigo looked at him.
"What?"
Eduardo whispered,
"That man..."
"...doesn't work here."
A wave of icy silence filled the surveillance room.
The fake waiter had entered one of the city's most secure restaurants...
Walked directly past billionaire bodyguards...
Approached Rodrigo's table...
And vanished without anyone noticing.
Rodrigo's instincts screamed that this was no coincidence.
Someone had infiltrated the dinner.
But why?
To poison Gabriel?
Or...
To make everyone believe Valentina had done it?
Before anyone could answer, the security guard checked the hallway camera.
His face instantly lost all color.
"Sir..."
Rodrigo turned sharply.
"What now?"
The guard pointed at the screen with a trembling hand.
"The fake waiter..."
"...never left the restaurant."
The cameras showed him entering the kitchen.
But...
Not a single camera ever captured him coming back out.
He had simply...
Disappeared.
As if he had vanished into thin air.
Rodrigo slowly looked toward Valentina, whose calm expression had finally begun to crack.
For the first time that night...
She looked genuinely afraid.
Not because of the accusation.
But because she had just realized something horrifying.
Someone else...
Had been playing the same deadly game.
