CHAPTER 3 — Police Found a Hidden Passage Beneath the Restaurant... But the Name Written on a Forgotten Photograph Made the Billionaire Collapse

The atmosphere inside Vila Real Restaurant had become unbearable.

The glamorous engagement dinner was over.

The chandeliers still sparkled.

The orchestra still sat silently on the stage.

But no one felt the luxury anymore.

Every guest understood they had become witnesses to something far bigger than a family argument.

Someone had entered the restaurant disguised as a waiter.

Someone had vanished without a trace.

And somewhere inside the building...

A child had nearly eaten food that might have cost him his life.

Rodrigo stood beside Gabriel, refusing to let the boy out of his sight.

He rested one protective hand on his son's shoulder while dialing a number from memory.

The call was answered before the first ring ended.

"This is Commissioner Marcos."

"I need you at Vila Real."

Rodrigo's voice was cold.

"Bring your best homicide team."

Marcos paused.

"Is Gabriel hurt?"

"Not yet."

The answer was enough.

"I'm on my way."

Twenty-three minutes later...

Police vehicles surrounded the restaurant.

The flashing blue lights reflected across the elegant glass walls, attracting curious crowds outside.

Inside, detectives photographed every table.

Forensic technicians carefully collected the scattered pasta from the broken plate.

Every grain.

Every breadcrumb.

Every drop of sauce.

Nothing was overlooked.

The suspicious Parmesan packets were sealed inside evidence bags.

Gabriel's untouched fork was collected.

Even the wine glasses were examined.

Rodrigo watched every step.

His instincts told him one terrifying truth.

If someone truly wanted Gabriel dead...

Tonight would not be the last attempt.

Meanwhile...

Valentina remained surprisingly calm.

Too calm.

She answered every question politely.

She never raised her voice.

She never demanded a lawyer.

Instead, she repeatedly said the same sentence.

"I have nothing to hide."

Detective Sofia Ramos quietly observed her.

Experienced investigators knew fear.

They knew panic.

They knew innocent people.

Valentina displayed none of them.

Instead...

She looked like someone waiting for something.

Or someone.

Upstairs, the security team replayed every camera angle again and again.

The mysterious waiter appeared for exactly forty-seven seconds.

No more.

No less.

He entered through the kitchen corridor.

Walked confidently toward Rodrigo's table.

Brushed against Valentina's chair.

Disappeared into the kitchen.

Gone.

No exit.

No disguise change.

Nothing.

It made no sense.

"There has to be another way out," Commissioner Marcos muttered.

Restaurant manager Eduardo slowly nodded.

"There is..."

Everyone looked at him.

"But it hasn't been used in years."

Eduardo led the detectives through the enormous industrial kitchen.

The chefs had already been evacuated.

Only the smell of fresh bread and roasted garlic remained.

They stopped beside an old storage room filled with dusty wine crates.

Eduardo pointed toward a massive wooden shelf.

"My grandfather built this restaurant."

He swallowed nervously.

"During renovations twenty years ago, workers discovered an old smuggling tunnel beneath the building."

Marcos narrowed his eyes.

"And you forgot to mention that?"

"I didn't think..."

"You didn't think someone disappearing into thin air might be connected?"

Eduardo lowered his head.

"I sealed the entrance years ago."

"At least..."

"I thought I did."

Several officers pushed the heavy shelf aside.

Behind it...

A rusted steel door emerged from the wall.

Its padlock had been freshly cut.

Rodrigo's pulse quickened.

Someone had opened it recently.

Very recently.

The detectives exchanged tense glances.

Marcos drew his handgun.

"So did everyone else."

The door creaked open.

A wave of cold, damp air rushed upward from the darkness below.

The tunnel was ancient.

Narrow stone walls stretched into darkness beneath the restaurant.

Old pipes dripped water onto the uneven floor.

Their flashlights revealed fresh muddy footprints.

Someone had definitely passed through recently.

Rodrigo insisted on following despite repeated warnings.

"I won't wait upstairs while someone hunts my son."

Marcos finally nodded.

"Stay behind us."

The group advanced carefully.

Every sound echoed.

Every shadow seemed alive.

Then...

One detective stopped.

"Commissioner."

He crouched beside the wall.

"There are fresh tire marks."

"Motorcycle."

"So whoever escaped..."

"...didn't leave on foot."

The tunnel ended beneath an abandoned warehouse several hundred yards away.

Its rusted doors stood wide open.

Inside...

Someone had left in a hurry.

Coffee still sat warm inside a paper cup.

An engine smell lingered in the air.

But the warehouse itself was empty.

Almost.

One young officer noticed something beneath a broken wooden pallet.

"Sir..."

He carefully picked up a weathered photograph covered in dust.

It showed a smiling young woman holding a three-year-old Gabriel in her arms beside Rodrigo.

Rodrigo's breathing stopped.

He recognized it instantly.

It had been taken during a family vacation six years earlier.

The woman smiling beside him...

Was Helena.

Gabriel's mother.

Rodrigo's hands began trembling.

"Where..."

"Where did this come from?"

No one answered.

The back of the photograph contained handwriting.

Faded.

Almost erased.

Marcos gently brushed away the dirt.

Then he read the words aloud.

"If you're reading this..."

"...she was never supposed to die."

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Rodrigo stared at the sentence as if the world itself had shattered.

His wife...

Hadn't died by accident?

Impossible.

The official investigation had concluded that Helena's speedboat struck submerged rocks during a storm.

There had been witnesses.

Insurance reports.

Police files.

Everything.

Had they all been wrong?

Gabriel quietly stepped closer.

"Dad..."

Rodrigo knelt before him.

The little boy looked frightened.

"There was something else."

"What?"

Gabriel hesitated.

"I didn't tell you because I thought nobody would believe me."

Rodrigo gently held his son's shoulders.

"I promise."

"I'll believe every word."

Gabriel took a deep breath.

"The night before Mommy died..."

"...I heard her arguing with a woman on the phone."

Rodrigo frowned.

"What woman?"

"I don't know."

"But Mommy kept saying..."

Gabriel's small voice cracked.

"'You'll never replace me.'"

Rodrigo felt his blood turn to ice.

Slowly...

Almost mechanically...

He turned his head toward Valentina.

She had gone completely pale.

For the first time since the nightmare began...

Her confidence vanished.

A single tear rolled down her cheek.

Not from sadness.

From fear.

Then, before anyone could question her...

Her phone vibrated.

The screen lit up.

Everyone saw the same message appear.

MISSION FAILED.

LEAVE NOW.

Valentina's eyes widened in horror.

She looked around the warehouse.

Not at the police.

Not at Rodrigo.

But toward the dark tunnel behind them...

As though she suddenly realized the person sending those messages...

Was watching them.

From somewhere nearby.
