Chapter 4 - THE SHOWDOWN IN THE NURSERY

Viral Title: "He raised the weapon against his own wife"—The terrifying moment my husband showed his true face.
"Caleb, don't do this," I said, backing away until my spine hit the wall of the nursery. I cradled Ethan tightly against my chest, shielding him with my body. "Look at yourself. You're drunk. You're threatening the mother of your child with a weapon."
"You're not his mother anymore," Caleb growled, his voice slurred but dangerous. "You're just a blip on our radar. My mother told me how this ends. You go to a state facility for a nice, long rest, and we raise Ethan to be a real Mercer. We'll tell him his mother died in childbirth. It’s cleaner that way."
The sheer coldness of his words struck me like a physical blow. This was the man I had loved. The man I had married. He had been completely hollowed out by his mother's wealth and poison.
"Your mother doesn't love you, Caleb," I said, trying to keep my voice steady to keep him talking. I could hear footsteps in the hallway outside. "She uses you. The moment she adopts Ethan, you become irrelevant. You'll just be the screw-up son who couldn't even keep his wife under control."
A flicker of doubt crossed Caleb's eyes. I had hit a nerve. His entire life had been a desperate scramble to earn Linda's approval, an approval she never gave.
"Shut up!" he yelled, raising the poker higher. "You don't know anything!"
"I know she has a forged adoption paper downstairs," I pressed on, taking a slow step to the side, trying to guide his eyes away from the door. "And she's going to use it to cut you out too. Think about it, Caleb. Why did she put her name as the adopting parent instead of yours?"
"That's a lie!" Caleb roared, lunging forward.
Before the metal poker could strike, a heavy shadow slammed into him from the side.
It was Rebecca.
She tackled her brother to the ground, the fire poker clattering across the hardwood floor. Caleb let out a grunt of pain, trying to push his sister off, but Rebecca was fueled by years of repressed rage. She pinned his arms, punching him square in the jaw.
"Run, Sarah! Go!" Rebecca screamed.
I didn't hesitate. I clutched Ethan to my chest and bolted out of the nursery, my C-section wound screaming in agony. Blood was beginning to seep through my makeshift bandages again, but I ran down the stairs, using the handrail to keep myself upright.
As I reached the grand foyer, the massive oak front doors swung open.
There stood Linda, flanked by two private security guards in black uniforms.
"Well, look what the cat dragged in," Linda said, her face twisting into a triumphant grin. "A bleeding, hysterical woman carrying a child she has no legal right to. Secure her, boys. And take the baby."
The two guards stepped forward, their hands moving to their utility belts.
"Don't touch her!" a voice boomed from the gallery above.
I looked up. Arthur Pendelton, my attorney, was walking down the grand staircase, holding his phone in the air.
"Mrs. Mercer," Arthur said, his voice echoing in the vast space. "I suggest you tell your men to stand down. I am currently live-streaming this entire encounter to a secure cloud server and three major media outlets. If your guards lay a hand on my client or that child, the entire world will watch the matriarch of the Mercer family orchestrate an armed kidnapping of an infant from a bleeding mother."
Linda laughed, a dry, rattling sound. "You think I care about the press, Arthur? I own the press in this state."
"Maybe," Arthur replied coolly, reaching the bottom of the stairs and stepping in front of me. "But you don't own the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Half an hour ago, I filed a formal complaint with the FBI for interstate custodial interference, human trafficking, and document forgery. The notary you used? She just confessed. She’s currently in custody, admitting she signed that paper yesterday under your direct instruction for a bribe of $10,000."
Linda’s smile finally faltered. Her eyes darted to the silver key I was still clutching in my left hand.
"And," Arthur continued, "we have the key to your private vault. By the time your friendly judge Harrison opens his courtroom on Monday, the federal prosecutors will already have a warrant for your arrest."
"This is my house!" Linda shrieked, her aristocratic facade completely shattering. "Get out! Get out of my house!"
"We're leaving," Arthur said, turning to me. "And we're taking Ethan."
As we walked out the front doors, the security guards stood still, refusing to move. They knew when a ship was sinking, and Linda Mercer’s empire was taking on water fast.
We climbed into Rebecca's car, which she had driven up to the front circle. She slid into the driver's seat, her knuckles bruised and her lip bleeding from her fight with Caleb, but she had a wild, victorious smile on her face.

"We got him," Rebecca whispered, looking back at Ethan, who was sleeping peacefully in his car seat.
"Not yet," I said, looking out the window as the gates of the Mercer estate receded into the distance. "Linda still has one card left to play. She’s going to try to destroy my reputation before Monday. We need to get to that bank vault before she can destroy the evidence."
