CHAPTER 2 — THE DOG THAT REFUSED TO FORGET

The steel door groaned open with a sound that echoed through the containment wing.

Every pair of eyes turned toward the entrance.

Mateo stood in the center of the room, wrists and ankles bound by heavy chains.

He hadn't seen daylight in years.

He hadn't seen Sombra in even longer.

For a heartbeat...

Neither of them moved.

Then Sombra stepped inside.

The Belgian Malinois froze.

His ears shot forward.

His amber eyes locked onto Mateo's face.

Time seemed to stop.

The prison guards expected the dog to wag his tail.

To rush into his old partner's arms.

Instead...

Sombra planted all four paws against the concrete floor.

A deep growl rumbled from somewhere deep inside his chest.

The sound vibrated through the room.

One guard instinctively reached for his rifle.

Another stepped backward.

Even the prison psychologist felt a chill crawl down her spine.

Deputy Commander Héctor tightened his grip on the tactical leash.

"There," he sneered.

"You see that, Vargas?"

"Even your own dog knows what kind of monster you became."

Several guards nodded.

It looked convincing.

After all...

Dogs could sense evil.

Or so everyone believed.

But Mateo never took his eyes off Sombra.

Eight years together had taught him something no one else in that room understood.

That wasn't an attack signal.

It was an alert.

The exact warning Sombra always gave before discovering explosives...

Hidden weapons...

Or someone carrying the scent of fresh blood.

Mateo's pulse quickened.

No...

Something was terribly wrong.

"Héctor..."

Mateo said quietly.

"Take one step away from him."

Héctor laughed.

"You don't give orders anymore."

"You'll be dead before sunrise."

Sombra growled louder.

His muscles tightened.

His nose twitched repeatedly.

Back and forth.

Back and forth.

Not toward Mateo.

Toward Héctor.

The dog wasn't looking at the prisoner.

He was smelling the man holding the leash.

The prison warden frowned.

"Commander..."

"Is everything under control?"

"Of course."

Héctor forced a smile.

"He's just excited."

But sweat had already begun forming along his forehead.

He pulled harder on the leash.

"Sombra."

"Heel."

The dog ignored him completely.

For the first time since becoming Héctor's assigned K9...

He refused a direct command.

Silence filled the room.

Only the sound of Sombra's breathing remained.

Then...

The impossible happened.

Instead of lunging at Mateo...

Sombra suddenly pulled backward with astonishing force.

The leash ripped from Héctor's hand.

"Grab him!" someone shouted.

Too late.

The Belgian Malinois sprinted across the room.

Several guards raised their rifles.

"Don't shoot!" the warden yelled.

Everyone expected Sombra to attack the condemned prisoner.

Instead...

He stopped inches from Mateo.

The massive dog stood perfectly still.

His growl disappeared.

Slowly...

He lowered his head.

Mateo felt tears sting his eyes.

"Sombra..."

The dog's tail moved once.

Then again.

Barely noticeable.

As if he still remembered every patrol...

Every dangerous mission...

Every promise they'd made to protect one another.

Mateo slowly knelt despite the chains digging into his knees.

He dared not touch the dog.

He simply whispered,

"I missed you too."

Sombra lifted his nose and gently pressed it against Mateo's bound hands.

The entire room fell silent.

No one spoke.

No one breathed.

Even the guards who believed Mateo was guilty stared in disbelief.

Dogs didn't greet murderers like this.

Not highly trained police dogs.

Not dogs that had spent years identifying dangerous criminals.

The prison psychologist quietly whispered,

"That's...not possible."

Héctor's jaw tightened.

His face turned pale.

He quickly stepped forward.

"Enough."

"The visit is over."

He reached for Sombra's collar.

The instant his fingers touched the dog's neck...

Sombra spun around with terrifying speed.

SNAP!

His jaws clamped shut only inches from Héctor's wrist.

Not biting.

Warning.

A warning so precise that every experienced K9 officer recognized it instantly.

The dog considered Héctor...

A threat.

"What the hell..."

one of the guards muttered.

Héctor stumbled backward.

"Control your dog!"

The irony of his own words echoed through the room.

He pulled a spare leash from his belt.

Before he could secure it...

Sombra suddenly lunged again.

This time not at Héctor himself...

But at the tactical vest hanging across his chest.

RIIIIP!

The reinforced fabric tore open beneath the dog's powerful jaws.

Documents exploded across the concrete floor.

Photographs.

Evidence bags.

Official reports.

One yellowed envelope slid directly to Mateo's feet.

Nobody moved.

One photograph landed face-up.

The prison psychologist bent down to pick it up.

Then she froze.

Her eyes widened.

"Commander..."

Her voice trembled.

"What is this?"

Héctor's heartbeat seemed to stop.

Without answering...

He rushed forward to grab the scattered papers.

Too late.

The prison warden had already picked up another photograph.

His expression changed instantly.

The image showed Captain Alejandro Ruiz...

Alive.

Standing beside several officers.

Including Mateo.

The timestamp printed in the corner made the warden's blood run cold.

The photo had been taken...

Forty-three minutes after the official investigation claimed Captain Ruiz had already been dead.

Which meant only one thing.

The official timeline...

Could not possibly be true.

The room fell into complete silence.

Mateo stared at the photograph.

Then slowly lifted his eyes toward Héctor.

For three years...

He had begged someone to believe he had been framed.

No one listened.

Now...

The first crack had appeared.

And it wasn't made by a lawyer.

Or a judge.

Or an investigator.

It had been made...

By a dog who refused to forget.

Outside the prison walls, the first rays of dawn crept over the mountains.

Inside...

The countdown to Mateo's execution continued.

Eleven hours remained.

But for the first time in years...

May you like

Someone inside that prison had begun to wonder whether they were preparing to execute an innocent man.

End of Chapter 2.
