CHAPTER 4 — THEY CAME TO ERASE THE TRUTH

The first burst of gunfire echoed through Black Ridge Prison like thunder.
Then came another.
And another.
Within seconds, the entire maximum-security facility descended into chaos.
Red emergency lights bathed the corridors in a ghostly glow.
Steel doors slammed shut automatically.
Sirens screamed from every corner of the prison.
"All units!"
a voice crackled over the emergency speakers.
"Unknown armed personnel have breached the outer checkpoint!"
"Repeat—this is not a drill!"
The prison warden's face turned pale.
"No one should even know we're holding the execution today."
Inspector Emilio Navarro didn't answer.
His eyes remained fixed on the black evidence pouch lying on the table.
Then he quietly said,
"They don't know about the execution."
"They're here for this."
The body camera.
The flash drives.
The files that should never have existed.
For the first time...
Everyone in the room understood the terrifying truth.
This wasn't a rescue mission.
It was a cleanup operation.
Someone wanted every piece of evidence destroyed...
And every witness silenced.
Outside...
The prison's main gate exploded inward.
A heavily armored truck smashed through the reinforced barrier.
Masked men dressed in black tactical uniforms poured into the yard.
Their movements were disciplined.
Professional.
Military.
They weren't cartel gunmen.
They weren't ordinary mercenaries.
They moved like men who had trained together for years.
One guard watching the security monitors whispered,
"They know the prison layout..."
"They're heading straight for this wing."
Inside the containment room...
Deputy Commander Héctor slowly backed toward the door.
"I'm going to coordinate the response."
"No."
Inspector Navarro's voice cut through the room like a knife.
"You're staying here."
Héctor forced a nervous smile.
"You seriously think I'm involved?"
"I think," Navarro replied calmly,
"that every major lie in this case somehow leads back to you."
The room fell silent.
Then...
Sombra growled.
Not at the attackers.
Not at the guards.
At Héctor.
Again.
The Belgian Malinois stepped sideways, blocking Héctor's path to the exit.
His posture was unmistakable.
He wasn't guarding Mateo anymore.
He was preventing Héctor from leaving.
One of the veteran prison guards frowned.
"I've seen that behavior before."
"When a K9 blocks someone like that..."
"He believes they're trying to flee a crime scene."
Héctor laughed.
But this time...
No one laughed with him.
A violent explosion rocked the building.
Concrete dust rained from the ceiling.
The lights flickered violently.
A young officer burst into the room, covered in blood and debris.
"They're inside!"
"They've already taken Control Block C!"
"They're executing anyone who resists!"
The warden immediately barked orders.
"Seal every corridor leading to Death Row!"
"Move all inmates into lockdown!"
"Protect the evidence!"
Another explosion interrupted him.
The radio went silent.
Every security camera feed suddenly turned black.
The attackers had disabled the surveillance system.
"They knew exactly where the servers were," Navarro muttered.
"This was planned."
Mateo stood quietly in the middle of the room.
Still chained.
Still technically a condemned prisoner.
Yet somehow...
He was the calmest person there.
He looked toward the warden.
"You don't have enough men."
"No."
"You don't know who's attacking."
"No."
"You don't know who inside the prison is helping them."
The warden hesitated.
Again...
"No."
Mateo took a slow breath.
"Then you're already losing."
The words stung because they were true.
Another officer rushed in.
"Sir!"
"The attackers are asking for one person."
The room froze.
The warden frowned.
"Who?"
The officer swallowed hard.
"Mateo Vargas."
No ransom.
No demands.
No negotiations.
Only one name.
Mateo.
Inspector Navarro slowly looked toward Héctor.
"You seem surprised."
"I am."
"Good."
"Because if you weren't..."
Navarro never finished.
BANG!
A sniper round shattered the reinforced window.
Glass exploded across the floor.
Everyone dove for cover.
The bullet buried itself in the concrete wall...
Exactly where Mateo had been standing one second earlier.
Sombra had moved first.
The dog slammed into Mateo's legs an instant before the shot.
Saving his life.
Mateo looked down at his old partner.
"You still remember."
Sombra looked back.
His breathing steady.
His eyes alert.
Waiting.
Always waiting.
Navarro carefully examined the bullet lodged in the wall.
His face darkened.
"This isn't cartel ammunition."
The warden looked closer.
His blood ran cold.
Military-grade armor-piercing rounds.
Only a handful of federal tactical units had legal access to them.
Someone inside the government...
Had supplied the attackers.
The prison psychologist stared at Mateo.
"I don't understand."
"If they wanted you dead..."
"They could have let the execution happen."
Mateo answered quietly.
"Because an execution creates records."
"A legal file."
"A death certificate."
"A chain of evidence."
He looked toward the body camera on the table.
"But if I disappear during an attack..."
"The truth disappears with me."
No one argued.
Because every word made perfect sense.
Suddenly...
Sombra's ears snapped toward the hallway.
He barked twice.
Short.
Urgent.
Mateo's expression changed instantly.
"What is it?"
The dog spun toward the ventilation shaft above the containment room.
Growling.
Listening.
Everyone instinctively looked up.
At first...
Nothing.
Then...
A faint metallic scraping sound echoed through the ceiling.
Someone...
Was crawling through the ventilation system.
Very slowly.
Very quietly.
Trying not to be heard.
The veteran guard whispered,
"Oh God..."
The sound stopped.
Complete silence.
Then...
A gloved hand slowly emerged through the ventilation grate.
Followed by the barrel of a suppressed assault rifle.
The assassin wasn't coming for everyone.
The weapon pointed directly...
At the evidence pouch containing the body camera.
Whoever had planned this attack knew one thing with absolute certainty.
Destroy the evidence...
May you like
And Mateo would die a murderer forever.
End of Chapter 4.
