CHAPTER 9 — The Final Mistake

The room remained silent after the call ended.

Detective Ethan Carter stared at the dead phone screen.

The stranger had made one mistake.

He had called.

Within seconds, the cybercrime unit began tracing the signal.

"It won't stay active for long," one technician warned.

"But if we're lucky..."

Dots flashed across a digital map.

The signal bounced between several cell towers before stopping near an abandoned freight yard on the edge of the city.

Every available unit was dispatched.

Red and blue lights raced through the darkness.

Meanwhile, officers quietly evacuated the surrounding area.

When Carter arrived, the yard looked deserted.

Rows of rusted train cars stretched into the distance.

Broken warehouses stood in complete silence.

Then an officer whispered into the radio.

"Movement."

A figure in black slipped between two freight cars.

"He's running!"

The chase exploded across the rail yard.

The suspect climbed fences, squeezed through narrow gaps, and disappeared between abandoned buildings.

Twice the officers nearly lost him.

Finally, he reached an old warehouse.

Inside, Carter found something chilling.

The building had been transformed into a hidden surveillance center.

Computer monitors displayed live feeds from dozens of public places.

Maps covered the walls.

Boxes contained fake hats, jackets, wigs, and sunglasses.

There were notebooks filled with observations about routines, school dismissal times, and busy intersections.

It became painfully clear that Sofia had not been chosen at random.

The stranger carefully watched public places, looking for children who walked alone.

Just as Carter stepped deeper into the warehouse, he heard metal crash behind him.

The suspect had climbed onto the steel beams above.

"You'll never understand," the man shouted.

"You think I lose because you caught one place?"

He jumped onto another platform and ran.

Carter followed.

Suddenly, the old steel walkway collapsed beneath the suspect's feet.

He grabbed a beam with one hand, dangling high above the concrete floor.

For a moment, Carter could have walked away.

Instead, he reached out.

"Take my hand."

The stranger hesitated.

Then he grabbed it.

Other officers rushed forward and safely pulled him onto the platform before placing him in handcuffs.

His escape was over.
