Chapter 1 - The Echo in the Lobby

The silence in the grand lobby of the Gran Imperial Hotel was heavy enough to crush a man. Alejandro Montero stood frozen, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped beast. Seven months of grief, late-night drinking, and unanswered questions collapsed into a single, agonizing moment.
Lucía stood before him in a faded denim-blue housekeeping smock. Her slender wrist squeezed the metal frame of the cleaning cart until her knuckles turned ivory white. Below her frail torso, her belly bulged prominently—seven months pregnant.
"Is everything all right with the service, sir?" she repeated, her voice flat, devoid of the warmth that used to light up Alejandro’s quietest nights.
"Sir?" Alejandro took a step forward, ignoring Valeria’s hand clinging tightly to his expensive arm. "Lucía, stop this. You vanished. You took your clothes, left your wedding ring on the vanity, and disappeared into thin air! I hired private investigators. I searched every corner of Mexico City! And you’re here... cleaning floors?"
"Mr. Montero, please keep your voice down," the hotel manager intercepted, sweating profusely under his tailored suit. "If this employee is bothering you, I can have her dismissed immediately—"
"Touch her and I buy this hotel just to fire you," Alejandro snapped, his dark eyes flashing with lethal intent.
Valeria tugged at his jacket, her crimson lips twisted in a sneer. "Alejandro, darling, look at her! She’s playing you. She probably ran off with another man, got herself knocked up, and now she’s pretending to be a martyr just as you walk in! Don't ruin our weekend over a maid."
Lucía’s eyes flicked to Valeria, then slowly settled on Alejandro. A cold, bitter smile touched her pale lips. "Listen to your girlfriend, Alejandro. She knows all about calculated appearances."
"What is that supposed to mean?" Valeria demanded, stepping forward defensively.

"It means," Lucía whispered, leaning closer so only Alejandro could hear, "that if you want to know why I left, you shouldn't be asking me. You should ask your mother... and the woman standing right beside you."
Before Alejandro could grab her hand, Lucía pushed her cleaning cart around the corner and disappeared into the service elevator, leaving a suffocating trail of bleach and silence behind.
