Chapter 1 - THE DEAD WOMAN ON THE 5:15 EXPRESS | "The Face on the Front Page Isn't a Ghost... It's Me."

The screech of metal on metal echoed through the dimly lit commuter car as the train rounded a sharp bend, but the sound was drowned out by the thunderous pulse roaring in Clara’s ears. Her trembling fingers hovered a millimeter above the yellowed newsprint. The headline screamed in thick, black block letters: FOUND FLOATING: VANCE BIOTECH HEIRESS CLARA VANCE PRONOUNCED DEAD AT 29. Beneath it was a crystal-clear high-resolution photograph of a woman with her exact high cheekbones, her sharp hazel eyes, and the tiny crescent-shaped scar tucked just beneath her left jawline.

"Don't look up," the stranger across the aisle repeated, his voice barely a breath against the rhythmic clack-clack of the tracks. He didn't look like a savior; he looked like a grim reaper clad in a bespoke charcoal suit, his hand resting inside his tailored coat where the outline of a holstered firearm bulged discreetly. "Keep your hood pulled low. The tall man in the navy trench coat just stepped into Car Four. He’s scanning seats."

"This is a mistake," Clara whispered, her voice cracking as panic clawed at her throat. "My name is Clara James. I’m a senior data analyst at Apex Logistics. I live on 42nd Street. I’ve paid taxes for three years. I have a cat. I’m nobody!"

"You’re a ghost with a forged social security number and three years of artificial memories," the man replied coldly, snapping his briefcase shut with a sharp click. "My name is Julian. I was paid five million dollars to kill you three years ago. I took the money, faked your drowning in the Chicago River, and buried you in the dullest life I could manufacture. But someone just tipped off your husband. And Arthur Vance does not leave loose ends."

Before Clara could digest the word husband, the double doors at the end of the passenger car hissed open. A heavy blast of cold air rushed through the car, carrying with it the heavy footfalls of two men moving with terrifying, military precision.

Julian’s hand moved with blinding speed. He grabbed Clara’s forearm, pulling her out of her seat just as a silent projectile shattered the double-paned window where her head had rested a fraction of a second earlier. Glass showered the aisle in a glittering burst of diamonds. Screams erupted from the handful of tired commuters scattered throughout the car as Julian dragged Clara toward the rear emergency exit, forcing her into the shadow of the metal vestibule.

"If we stay on this train until the next station, you die," Julian growled, slamming his shoulder against the heavy manual override lever of the exterior door. "So hold your breath."

"Hold my—"

The emergency door swung wide into the howling black vacuum of the night. Without waiting for her consent, Julian grabbed her waist and leaped into the abyss.
