CHAPTER 2 — The Woman in the Coffin

The words hung in the air like the echo of another lightning strike.

"He buried my mama yesterday... even though I saw her blink."

Ethan Cole didn't answer.

For the first time in years, the billionaire who negotiated billion-dollar acquisitions without hesitation found himself completely unable to speak.

Emma wasn't crying.

She wasn't screaming.

She simply stared at the man walking across the emergency room with the quiet certainty of a child who had learned that the truth often sounded unbelievable.

The stranger smiled politely at the nurses.

He nodded at security.

He even stopped to hold the elevator door for an elderly couple.

Anyone watching would have seen a successful businessman worried about his nieces.

Only Emma saw something different.

Her small fingers dug deeper into Ethan's sleeve.

"Don't let him see me."

Ethan immediately stepped in front of her.

The movement was subtle.

Natural.

But deliberate.

The man reached them only seconds later.

He extended a perfectly manicured hand.

"Mr. Cole?"

Ethan didn't shake it.

"You know who I am?"

The stranger laughed lightly.

"Everyone in healthcare knows Ethan Cole."

"My name is Richard Lawson."

His smile never faltered.

"I'm terribly sorry you had to witness this family emergency."

He glanced toward Emma.

"There you are, sweetheart."

Emma pressed herself against Ethan's side.

Richard sighed dramatically, looking embarrassed.

"I'm afraid my niece gets frightened around strangers."

Ethan's voice turned cold.

"She seems frightened around you."

For the first time...

Richard's eyes hardened.

Only for a fraction of a second.

Then the charming smile returned.

"My sister passed away yesterday after a long illness."

He lowered his head, pretending grief.

"Poor Emma is confused."

"My wife and I have been trying to locate the girls all night."

He reached into his jacket.

"I have legal guardianship paperwork."

The words made Emma stop breathing.

"No..." she whispered.

Richard produced a thick envelope.

"Everything has already been approved."

Hospital policy required proof before releasing a minor.

He knew exactly what documents to bring.

A charge nurse accepted the folder.

Inside were official court forms.

Birth certificates.

Emergency custody authorization.

Death certificate.

Everything appeared legitimate.

Denise frowned.

"It all seems to be in order."

Emma suddenly shouted.

"No!"

Every head in the waiting room turned.

"He's lying!"

Richard slowly knelt several feet away, careful to look gentle.

"Emma."

"No!"

"I know you're scared."

"You killed Mama!"

The waiting room went silent.

Not a single monitor seemed loud enough to break the tension.

Richard closed his eyes as though enduring unbearable pain.

"This is exactly what the counselor warned us about."

He looked toward Ethan.

"Trauma creates false memories."

Ethan studied both faces.

One belonged to a polished executive whose every sentence sounded rehearsed.

The other belonged to a terrified seven-year-old whose feet were still bleeding onto the hospital floor.

He knew which one looked honest.

Just then...

The pediatric doors burst open.

Dr. Sarah Whitmore hurried into the hallway.

"Who's responsible for Baby Lily?"

Richard raised his hand immediately.

"I am."

The doctor didn't answer.

She looked directly at Ethan instead.

"You came with the child?"

"I met her here."

Sarah nodded.

"Then you should hear this."

Richard stepped forward.

"I'm the legal guardian."

Sarah ignored him.

"The baby is severely dehydrated."

"She's suffering from untreated pneumonia."

"There are bruises on both wrists."

Denise frowned.

"Wrist bruises?"

Sarah nodded.

"As if someone repeatedly grabbed her."

The doctor hesitated.

"And..."

"There are older injuries."

The room became deathly still.

"Broken ribs."

"Already healing."

"At least three weeks old."

Emma quietly lowered her head.

Richard laughed nervously.

"Children fall."

Sarah's expression never changed.

"Infants don't accidentally fracture multiple ribs."

Silence.

Then Emma whispered...

"He got mad because she wouldn't stop crying."

Richard snapped his head toward her.

His smile disappeared completely.

For just one second.

Long enough for Ethan to see the hatred behind it.

Then it returned.

"This poor child has clearly been coached."

Ethan folded his arms.

"By who?"

Richard blinked.

"What?"

"Who coached her?"

Richard hesitated.

"My sister."

"The one you say died yesterday?"

"Yes."

"The same woman who supposedly coached her... before dying."

Richard's answer came too slowly.

"Exactly."

Ethan noticed.

So did Denise.

So did Dr. Whitmore.

A police officer stationed inside the ER quietly stepped closer.

Richard realized the room was beginning to shift against him.

He changed tactics immediately.

"This is becoming emotional."

He smiled toward Ethan.

"Perhaps we should discuss this privately."

"No."

"I'm sure you'll understand."

"No."

Richard's jaw tightened.

"Mr. Cole..."

"I said no."

For the first time in years...

People in Ethan's companies would later remember this exact tone.

It was the voice he used seconds before firing executives for dishonesty.

"You walked into this hospital with custody papers before anyone even confirmed where these children were."

Richard didn't answer.

"You knew Emma would come here."

Still nothing.

"You weren't searching."

"You were waiting."

A bead of sweat rolled down Richard's temple.

Before he could respond...

A young nurse hurried toward Dr. Whitmore holding a sealed evidence bag.

"We found this."

Inside the plastic bag...

Was a tiny silver locket.

It had been hidden beneath Lily's blanket.

Emma gasped.

"Mama's necklace."

Sarah carefully opened it.

Inside were two tiny photographs.

One showed Emma as a newborn.

The other...

Made Ethan's heart stop.

It was an old photograph taken nearly eight years earlier.

A much younger Ethan stood beside a smiling woman with auburn hair.

His arm rested gently around her shoulders.

Both of them were laughing.

Both looked happier than either had any right to be.

Denise looked from the photo...

To Ethan...

Then back again.

"You know her?"

Ethan's face had gone completely pale.

He barely managed to whisper the answer.

"...Her name was Grace."

Richard's expression changed instantly.

Not surprise.

Fear.

Real fear.

Because the one secret he had spent years making sure stayed buried...

Had just resurfaced inside a baby's necklace.

Ethan stared at the photograph, unable to breathe.

Grace.

The woman he had loved.

The woman who had vanished without a goodbye...

Eight years ago.

The woman everyone told him had abandoned him for another man.

His hands began shaking.

Then he noticed something else inside the locket.

Folded so tightly it was almost invisible...

Was a tiny piece of paper.

Dr. Whitmore carefully unfolded it.

Only one sentence was written in fading blue ink.

May you like

"If Ethan ever sees this... tell him Emma is his daughter."
