CHAPTER 3 — The Daughter He Never Knew Existed

The emergency room fell completely silent.
No one moved.
No one breathed.
The folded note trembled in Dr. Sarah Whitmore's hand as though the words themselves carried weight.
"If Ethan ever sees this... tell him Emma is his daughter."
Denise looked at Ethan.
Then at Emma.
Then back again.
For the first time, everyone noticed it.
The same hazel eyes.
The same slight dimple in the left cheek.
The same stubborn way of lifting the chin when frightened.
It wasn't obvious before.
Now it was impossible to ignore.
Ethan stared at the little girl as though the world had tilted beneath his feet.
His lips parted.
Nothing came out.
Emma looked confused.
"Why is everyone looking at me?"
No one answered.
Dr. Whitmore slowly handed Ethan the note.
His hands shook so badly he nearly dropped it.
He recognized the handwriting immediately.
Grace.
Every curve of every letter.
Every little flourish on the capital "E."
He had seen those letters thousands of times.
On birthday cards.
On grocery lists.
On love notes tucked into his briefcase before business trips.
He hadn't seen them in eight years.
Yet he would have recognized them in complete darkness.
"This... this isn't possible."
His voice cracked.
"Grace told me she couldn't have children."
Richard Lawson stepped forward immediately.
"Exactly."
His confidence returned almost instantly.
"You see?"
He pointed toward the note.
"Someone fabricated this."
Ethan slowly looked up.
Richard smiled.
"I remember my sister's mental state before she disappeared."
The sentence caught Ethan's attention.
"Disappeared?"
Richard realized his mistake.
"I mean... before she passed away."
Too late.
Ethan had heard the difference.
So had Officer Daniel Brooks, who had quietly moved closer during the exchange.
The officer spoke for the first time.
"Mr. Lawson..."
"You first said your sister died yesterday."
Richard nodded.
"Yes."
"But just now you said she disappeared."
Richard forced a laugh.
"Grief."
"I misspoke."
Officer Brooks didn't look convinced.
Neither did anyone else.
Before another question could be asked...
Emma tugged gently on Ethan's jacket.
"Mister Ethan?"
He immediately knelt beside her.
"Yes?"
She looked at him with complete innocence.
"Were you Mama's friend?"
His throat tightened.
"I..."
"I loved your mama."
Emma smiled.
A tiny...
Heartbreaking smile.
"Mama loved you too."
The words shattered him.
Tears filled Ethan's eyes before he could stop them.
Emma tilted her head.
"Why are you crying?"
He couldn't answer.
Because he wasn't crying for today.
He was crying for eight years of stolen memories.
Eight birthdays he had never celebrated.
Eight Christmas mornings.
Eight first days of school.
Eight years believing the woman he loved had abandoned him without explanation.
And standing in front of him...
Was the little girl who should have been calling him Dad all along.
Dr. Whitmore interrupted gently.
"Ethan..."
"I think Emma should sit down."
Only then did everyone notice she was swaying.
Her face had become unusually pale.
The adrenaline that carried her through the storm was disappearing.
Her body was finally giving up.
Denise rushed over with a wheelchair.
Emma resisted.
"No."
"You need to rest."
"I have to stay with Lily."
"You can see her soon."
Emma slowly shook her head.
"I promised Mama."
"What did you promise?"
"That I'd never leave Lily alone."
The sentence silenced the room once again.
How many nights had this child protected her baby sister?
How many times had she stood between Lily and danger?
How many meals had she skipped so the baby could eat?
Officer Brooks looked toward Richard.
"When was the last time you saw these children?"
Richard answered without hesitation.
"Yesterday morning."
Emma instantly whispered—
"He's lying."
Richard ignored her.
"My sister had become unstable."
"She refused medical treatment."
"She ran away with the girls."
Ethan frowned.
"If she ran away..."
"How did you know exactly which funeral home buried her?"
Richard froze.
The question hit harder than Ethan expected.
Because no one had actually mentioned a funeral home.
Not once.
Yet Richard's eyes betrayed him.
Only for a second.
Officer Brooks noticed.
"So there was a funeral?"
Richard recovered quickly.
"Of course."
"Where?"
Silence.
"What cemetery?"
Longer silence.
Finally—
"I don't remember the name."
Officer Brooks exchanged a glance with another officer.
Nobody forgot where they buried their own sister.
Especially the day after the funeral.
At that exact moment...
A nurse hurried into the waiting area carrying a clipboard.
"Dr. Whitmore."
"What is it?"
"The lab called."
"About the baby?"
"No."
She looked confused.
"It's about the blood samples."
"What blood samples?"
"The emergency trauma panel."
Sarah frowned.
"We only ordered routine labs."
The nurse nodded.
"I know."
"But the computer automatically flagged something."
She lowered her voice.
"The baby's blood type."
Sarah glanced at the chart.
Then looked at Ethan.
Then back again.
Her expression changed completely.
"Ethan..."
"What?"
"Lily's blood type is AB negative."
"So?"
Sarah swallowed.
"So is yours."
Richard immediately laughed.
"Millions of people share blood types."
Sarah nodded.
"That's true."
"But AB negative is one of the rarest blood types in the world."
She looked at Emma.
"We tested hers too."
Ethan felt his heartbeat accelerate.
"And?"
"She's also AB negative."
Richard interrupted sharply.
"Coincidence."
Sarah didn't respond.
Instead, she quietly asked Ethan one question.
"What was Grace's blood type?"
He answered instantly.
"O positive."
Sarah slowly closed the chart.
Then looked directly into Ethan's eyes.
"There is only one explanation that fits."
The room seemed to stop spinning.
"If Grace was O positive..."
"And both girls are AB negative..."
She paused.
"Their biological father had to carry the AB gene."
Ethan's face drained of color.
Sarah finished the sentence no one else wanted to say aloud.
"The probability that both girls are yours is extraordinarily high."
Emma looked between the adults, completely confused.
"What does that mean?"
Ethan stared into her frightened eyes.
His voice barely existed.
"It means..."
Before he could finish—
A deafening explosion shook the entire hospital.
BOOM!
The lights flickered violently.
Smoke alarms erupted throughout the building.
People screamed.
Glass shattered somewhere near the ambulance entrance.
A security guard shouted—
"Everyone get down!"
The emergency room instantly descended into chaos.
Patients ducked beneath chairs.
Doctors rushed toward the pediatric wing.
Officer Brooks reached for his radio.
"Eagle One, report!"
Static.
Nothing.
Then another security officer came sprinting through the hallway.
His face was white with panic.
"They're trying to take the baby!"
Every head snapped toward the pediatric unit.
Richard Lawson was gone.
No one had seen him leave.
Emma grabbed Ethan's hand with terrifying force.
Her tiny voice trembled.
"I told you..."
May you like
"...he always comes back for Lily."
