CHAPTER 5 — The Secret Hidden Inside the Teddy Bear

The underground parking garage fell into a suffocating silence.
Rain pounded against the concrete entrance.
Somewhere above them, fire alarms still echoed through St. Anne's Medical Center.
But down here...
No one seemed to breathe.
Richard Lawson kept the pistol pressed lightly against Emma's temple.
His smile was calm.
Almost amused.
"Go on, Emma," he said softly.
"Tell your father."
Emma's eyes filled with tears.
She slowly shook her head.
"Mama said..."
"...never tell anyone."
Richard's smile faded.
"That wasn't a request."
"It was."
Emma surprised everyone.
Her tiny voice trembled...
But she didn't look away.
"Mama said if you ever asked..."
"...it meant you were the bad man."
For the first time all night, Richard lost control.
His face twisted with rage.
"You little—"
"Don't!" Ethan shouted.
Richard immediately stopped.
The pistol remained against Emma's head.
Officer Brooks subtly shifted his position, searching for a clean shot.
Too risky.
One wrong move...
Emma dies.
Richard inhaled slowly, forcing himself to smile again.
"Children remember stories."
"They don't remember facts."
He looked at Ethan.
"Grace became paranoid."
"She imagined people were chasing her."
Ethan never took his eyes off Emma.
"No."
"You chased her."
Richard laughed.
"You still think this is about family?"
"It isn't."
He pointed toward the hospital above.
"It's about hundreds of millions of dollars."
The words caught Ethan's attention.
Richard saw it.
"Now you're listening."
Eight years earlier...
Grace Lawson hadn't simply worked as a financial analyst.
She had uncovered something enormous.
While auditing medical foundation accounts connected to several private investors...
She found a hidden network.
Charities.
Medical grants.
Children's hospitals.
Insurance reimbursements.
Everything appeared legitimate.
Until she noticed the numbers.
Millions of dollars meant for sick children had disappeared.
Not once.
Not twice.
Every year.
For over a decade.
Someone had been stealing from dying children.
Grace copied everything.
Every bank transfer.
Every shell company.
Every signature.
Every fake invoice.
Then she disappeared.
Richard smiled.
"My employers searched for that evidence for eight years."
Ethan's voice turned icy.
"And they never found it."
"No."
"Because Grace was smarter than all of us."
Emma quietly whispered—
"Mama said monsters only think grown-ups can keep secrets."
Richard snapped his head toward her.
"What did she tell you?"
Emma stayed silent.
He squeezed her shoulder harder.
"What did she tell you?"
A tear rolled down her cheek.
"Mama said..."
"...if Daddy ever came back..."
"...give him Mr. Buttons."
Ethan frowned.
"Mr. Buttons?"
Emma nodded.
"My teddy bear."
Richard's eyes suddenly widened.
For the first time...
He looked frightened.
Real fear.
"No..."
He whispered.
"No..."
Ethan noticed immediately.
"You know what she's talking about."
Richard's breathing became uneven.
"He wasn't supposed to keep the bear."
Officer Brooks frowned.
"What bear?"
Emma looked toward Ethan.
"The one Lily sleeps with."
Ethan's heartbeat accelerated.
The old stuffed teddy.
The one they'd found lying beside Lily in the ER.
The one nobody had paid attention to.
Richard suddenly shouted—
"Kill them!"
The command echoed through the garage.
From behind two parked SUVs...
Three armed men emerged.
Automatic pistols.
Silencers.
Professional formation.
Brooks reacted instantly.
"GUN!"
The garage exploded.
BANG!
BANG!
BANG!
Concrete shattered.
Car windows exploded.
Everyone dove for cover.
Brooks fired twice.
One attacker collapsed behind a pickup truck.
Another disappeared behind a pillar.
Richard dragged Emma toward the SUV.
"Get in!"
Emma screamed.
"DAD!"
Without thinking—
Ethan charged.
Not because he had a plan.
Because fathers don't calculate.
They move.
A bullet tore through his suit jacket.
Another slammed into the SUV door inches from his head.
He kept running.
Richard shoved Emma toward the open vehicle.
Just as she reached the door...
She did something nobody expected.
She bit Richard's hand.
Hard.
He screamed.
The pistol slipped.
Emma broke free.
"Ethan!"
She sprinted across the wet concrete.
Ethan caught her just as another shot rang out.
He wrapped his body around hers.
Glass exploded behind them.
Officer Brooks and two responding officers returned fire.
One gunman fell.
Another fled deeper into the garage.
The third jumped into a waiting van.
Richard looked around.
Everything was collapsing.
Police sirens were growing louder outside.
More officers were arriving.
His operation had failed.
He glared at Ethan with pure hatred.
"This isn't over."
Then he reached inside his coat.
Brooks shouted—
"Gun!"
Everyone aimed.
Instead...
Richard threw something small onto the concrete floor.
A smoke grenade.
White smoke erupted instantly.
Visibility disappeared.
Seconds later...
Tires screeched.
An engine roared.
By the time the smoke cleared...
The black SUV was gone.
So was Richard Lawson.
Minutes later...
The garage filled with police officers.
Paramedics treated Ethan's shoulder where a bullet had grazed him.
Emma refused to let go of his hand.
Not even for a second.
Brooks walked over carrying an evidence bag.
Inside...
Was Richard's dropped phone.
"He left this behind."
Ethan looked up.
"Can you unlock it?"
Brooks smiled.
"If we're lucky."
Just then...
Dr. Sarah Whitmore rushed into the garage carrying Lily in her arms.
The baby's fever had begun to drop.
She was sleeping peacefully.
Clutched tightly against her tiny chest...
Was an old brown teddy bear.
One button eye was missing.
The fur was faded.
The stitching around its stomach looked newer than the rest.
Emma immediately pointed.
"Mr. Buttons!"
Sarah looked confused.
"She's been holding him the whole time."
Ethan gently took the teddy bear.
It felt unusually heavy.
He turned it over.
Ran his fingers across the stitching.
Someone had carefully sewn the belly shut by hand.
Not factory stitching.
Fresh thread.
Hidden with incredible skill.
Brooks leaned closer.
"You think..."
Ethan nodded slowly.
"I think Grace wanted someone to find this."
Sarah reached for a small pair of medical scissors.
"Should we open it?"
Before anyone could answer...
Emma suddenly grabbed Ethan's wrist.
"No!"
Everyone looked at her.
"Mama said..."
"...don't open him..."
"...until you find the man with the dragon tattoo."
Silence.
Officer Brooks frowned.
"What dragon tattoo?"
Emma looked around nervously.
"Mama said he was the only police officer she could trust."
Brooks' expression changed.
Slowly...
He rolled up the sleeve of his uniform.
On the inside of his forearm...
Hidden beneath the fabric...
Was a faded black dragon tattoo.
Emma gasped.
She smiled for the first time since arriving at the hospital.
Pointing at Brooks, she whispered—
"That's him."
Brooks stared at the child in disbelief.
Then at the teddy bear.
Then at Ethan.
His voice dropped to almost nothing.
"I've been looking for Grace..."
May you like
"...for eight years."
