CHAPTER 6 — The Children Nobody Was Supposed to Find

Michael sprinted upstairs.
Locked doors lined the hallway.
Behind one...
A little voice whispered.
"Please don't leave."
He kicked the door open.
Inside...
Three frightened children huddled together.
Another room.
Two boys.
Another.
A teenage girl holding a toddler.
Eight children.
All carrying different last names.
None knew why they were there.
One little boy asked quietly,
"Are we finally allowed to go home?"
Michael couldn't answer.
Because many of them...
Didn't even know where home was.
Police sirens suddenly echoed outside.
Victor smiled.
"Too late."
Michael looked through the window.
Not police.
Private security.
Nearly thirty armed men surrounded the estate.
Victor calmly straightened his suit.
"You think this ends with me?"
"It doesn't."
"The people above me own judges."
"They own senators."
"They own hospitals."
"They own newspapers."
Michael stepped closer.
"Then today..."
"...they lose."
Victor laughed.
"You still believe truth wins?"
Michael pulled the old cassette recorder from his jacket.
"I already uploaded everything."
Victor's smile disappeared.
"What?"
Michael held up his phone.
Every document.
Every recording.
Every confession.
Had been automatically sent to every major news network, federal agency, and international investigative journalist thirty minutes earlier.
There was no stopping it.
Victor lunged forward.
Before he reached Michael...
The mansion's front doors exploded open.
This time...
It really was the FBI.
Agents flooded every room.
Children were carried to safety.
Victor Langston was forced to his knees in handcuffs.
As officers led him away...
He looked at Michael one last time.
"You saved them."
Michael shook his head.
"No."
He looked toward Sophie...
who was helping a frightened little girl put on a pair of shoes that were too big for her.
"A little girl looking for a pair of shoes..."
"...saved all of us."
The scandal became one of the largest criminal conspiracies in American history.
Dozens of powerful families were exposed.
Hospitals reopened cold cases.
Hundreds of adults discovered they had been raised by the wrong families.
And Michael Harrison walked away from the fortune that had been built on stolen lives.
Instead...
He adopted Sophie.

And together, they transformed the old Harrison estate into a children's home called The Promise House—a place where every child, no matter where they came from, would finally know one thing for certain:
They belonged.
