Chapter 8 - THE LAST SURPRISE

Six months later.

The sun shone brightly over the grand courtyard of the City Courthouse. A massive swarm of reporters and news cameras blocked the steps, eager for the verdict in the trial of the century.

Mia stood at the top of the steps, looking stunning in a sharp white suit. She was no longer the timid maid in an orange uniform; she was now the Vice President of the newly formed Vance-Sovereign Justice Foundation.

Beside her, Emily smiled as the crowd cheered.

The jury had delivered their verdict moments ago: Julian Vance and Victoria Vance were sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Detective Sterling and Dr. Thorne received twenty-five years each.

As reporters shouted questions, Mia stepped up to the microphone.

"Today, justice was served," Mia said, her voice clear and resonant. "This was never just about money. It was about power, greed, and the belief that wealthy men can bury their crimes in the dark. But light always finds a way through the cracks."

The crowd applauded wildly as Mia and Emily walked down the steps toward their private limousine.

Inside the quiet vehicle, Emily took a deep breath, leaning back against the leather seat. "It’s finally over," she murmured, closing her eyes.

"Yes," Mia agreed, looking out the window as the courthouse faded into the distance. "It's finally over."

Suddenly, Emily’s phone buzzed on the console between them.

Emily glanced down at the screen. It was an anonymous text message from an untraceable, encrypted number.

Mia watched as the smile slowly vanished from Emily’s face. Her skin drained of color, turning as white as the coffin she had once been trapped inside.

"Emily? What is it?" Mia asked, her heart dropping.

Without saying a word, Emily handed the phone to Mia.

Mia looked at the screen. The message contained a single, high-resolution photograph taken from inside a dark room.

It was a photo of Mia’s own biological mother—a woman who had disappeared mysteriously ten years ago and was presumed dead—sitting tied to a chair in an unknown location.

Below the photo was a short text message:

“You thought Julian was the mastermind? Julian was just a foot soldier. Welcome to the real game, Mia. If you ever want to see your mother alive, bring Emily to the abandoned docks tonight. Come alone. Or the next coffin we seal will be yours.”

Mia looked up at Emily, horror freezing the air in her lungs.

The coffin had opened... but the nightmare was only just beginning.
