CHAPTER 1: THE LITTLE BOY ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD

Officer Daniel Brooks had worked patrol for nearly fifteen years.
He had seen abandoned cars, runaway teenagers, drunk drivers, and every kind of tragedy imaginable.
But nothing prepared him for what he saw that cold morning.
A tiny boy was walking alone along the shoulder of Interstate 47.
The child looked no older than three years old.
His clothes were filthy and torn.
His tiny sneakers were covered in mud.
His face was scratched.
His blonde hair was tangled and dirty.
And worst of all...
He was completely alone.
Cars sped by at seventy miles per hour.
No parent.
No guardian.
No one searching for him.
Daniel immediately pulled over.
His heart began racing.
The little boy looked exhausted, as if he had been wandering for days.
Daniel slowly approached.
"Hey buddy..."
The child stopped walking.
"What's your name?"
No answer.
"Where's your mommy?"
The boy's lip began trembling.
Suddenly tears poured down his face.
He cried so hard he could barely breathe.
Daniel quickly picked him up.
The child immediately wrapped both arms around the officer's neck.
As if he had finally found safety.
That moment sent chills down Daniel's spine.
Children don't cling to strangers like that unless they're terrified.
Something was very wrong.
At the station, doctors examined the child.
He was dehydrated.
Malnourished.
Covered in bruises.
Several injuries appeared to be days old.
The boy still refused to speak.
Not a single word.
Social workers suspected trauma.
Police released his photo online.
The image spread across Facebook within minutes.
Thousands shared it.
Everyone asked the same question:
"Who is this little boy?"
Then, three hours later...
The phone rang.
And everything changed.
A woman screaming hysterically claimed the boy was her son.
His name was Ethan.
He had supposedly disappeared four days earlier.
Police believed they had solved the mystery.

They were wrong.
The real nightmare was only beginning
