Chapter 1 - The Invisible Ally

Grace turned the heavy brass latch, the click echoing like a gunshot in the sterile quiet of Suite 704. Her breath came in frantic, shallow rasps as I sat straight up in the hospital bed, pulling the cardiac bypass wire I had spent four painstaking days secretly recalibrating. The heart monitor continued its steady, slow beep, mocking the chaos in the room.

Grace didn't scream. She didn't drop the tray of fresh lilies. Her spine stiffened, her blue eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that completely shattered the fragile, meek illusion she had worn for six months.

"If you make a sound," I rasped, my vocal cords raw like crushed gravel, "we both end up in the East River before midnight."

"I don't scream, Mr. Moretti," Grace whispered, her voice dropping its soft polish and turning into cold steel. "And I don't die easily either. Now lie back down before the night nurse checks the hallway telemetry."

I stared at her. "You knew."

"I knew your fiancée was buying lethal doses of paralytics from a dirty resident on the third floor," Grace said, moving swiftly to the window blinds and adjusting them to block the line of sight from the courtyard. "I knew your cousin Anthony moved three million dollars into a panamanian shell company two hours after your crash. And I know that the white lilies on your bedside table aren't flowers, Dominic. They're audio bugs."

My blood ran colder than the IV fluid in my arm. I looked at the ceramic vase beside my bed. The woman everyone treated like furniture had just dismantled a multi-million-dollar conspiracy in three sentences.

"Who are you, Grace?" I demanded.

"Someone who needs you alive," she said, leaning over my bed, her face inches from mine. "Because if you die before Friday, they burn this entire city down—and people like me get caught in the ash."
